bors together. They have
started a neighborhood
youth club where youths,
black and white, play and
socialize together.
"We encourage the inte-
gration," said Mr. Nahari.
"But please don't forget
that these people come
from widely different ways
of life. The Russians knew
how to work appliances
when they came here;
some of the Ethiopians
had never seen indoor
plumbing before. But
again, this points out the
beauty of Israel and what
we're doing here. Israel's
history is made up of peo-
•ple from different lands
with different customs
and even skin colors. But
we're all Jews."
Shay Samuel, an Israeli
from Ethiopia, has lec-
tured in Detroit on the
absorption process. At
Givat Hamatos, he is the
program coordinator for
the Ethiopians.
"Everything for us is
new here," he said. "We
got here, and we were eat-
ing different foods. For
the Russians, it was pret-
ty much the same. We had
perhaps more difficulty
getting jobs because we
weren't used to any sort of
Western society. When
you come here, it's a new
country and it's hard. But
most Ethiopians will tell
you, it's better than last
year."
At a day-care center for
the Ethiopian children,
Hebrew is spoken fluently
during play. Over in one
corner are Sabbath can-
dlesticks and a makeshift
ark for a Torah. The chil-
dren color pictures of
menorot and Magen
Davids.
Judith Rove looks on.
"It will be better for Rifka
and these children," she
said.
Outside, Judith meets
another friend. The two
whisper quietly to one
another, and then they
close their eyes and
Judith says a small prayer
for better health for her
friend.
Another lady invites us
to her home. Again, drink
and food are produced.
She and her husband
show the white tapestries
with gold lions she has
weaved. She also has
weaved hats in purple and
red. Brand new to Israel,
Mr. Nahari said that
when people leave the car-
