n a seven-page letter to
the Jerusalem Post that
has yet to be published,
the Encyclopedia Bri-
tannica's editor-in-chief
conceded that three Post
articles that criticized the
reference work''s entries
on the Mideast has made
some valid points.
But overall, wrote Robert
McHenry, the articles "sub-
stantially misrepresented
Britannica's treatment of
these matters and... [had]
manufactured baseless
charges of bias. I hope we
are not alone in our willing-
ness to admit error and cor-
rect it."
The articles by Andrea
Levin, John Landau and
Ruth Willers appeared in
the Post last October and
March. They claimed the
Britannica's entries on
"Palestine," "Zionism" and
"Israel" were inaccurate and
pro-Palestinian.
Among Mr. McHenry's
many points in his letter:
* "To a great extent,"
John Landau's "criticisms
boil down to the failure of
certain Britannica articles...
to be what he wishes them
to be, which on his evidence
is polemical and argumenta-
tive."
* "Mr. Landau attempted
to read some meaning into a
simple mistake. The total
area of occupied territories
is given as 'more than 7,000
square miles' instead of the
correct 'more than 7,000
square kilometers.' This...
will be corrected at the ear-
liest possible opportunity."
* Mr. Landau's criticism
of the Britannica's article,
"Zionism," "is in part appro-
priate, in part a quibble.
The sentence he quoted errs
in seeming to place the
whole responsibility for the
movement of Arab popula-
tion out of the new state [of
Israel] on the new state
itself..."
* Of Ms. Willers' asser-
tion that the encyclopedia
the
term
misuses
"Palestine" to refer to the
land now known as Israel
during various historical
periods, "we do not agree
that the term cannot be
used in a general sense, as
one in common usage refer-
ring to a more or less well
defined region, irrespective
of time. It is no more absurd
than it is to refer to the

Indians living in, say,
`Nebraska' before the state
was formed."
* Ms. Levin falsely claims
that the "Palestine" entry
had no reference to the
Holocaust. And while the
entry lacks "an enumeration
of PLO subgroups," as she
stated, "some are men-
tioned" and "there are sev-
eral mentions of hijackings
and similar acts by
Palestinians. It is very
important to note that
`Palestine' is but one article
in a very large encyclopedia.
Elsewhere in the set in an
article titled 'Holocaust.'
Elsewhere are other articles
that detail specific acts of
terrorism committed by one
or another Palestinian orga-
nization."

Podhoretz Takes
The Heat

"I had this coming,"
admits Norman Podhoretz
in Commentary, the jour-
nal he edits.
In Commentary's April
issue, Mr. Podhoretz
retreated from his long-held
position that U.S. Jews "had
no moral right to criticize
Israel's security policies,"
mostly because he believes
that the current Mideast
peace process is misguided
and, for Israel, almost suici-
dal.
In
the
current
Commentary, noting the
glee with which liberals
pounced on his retreat, he
shrugs, "How could these
people resist the golden
opportunity I was now
handing them to get some of
their own back?"
Perhaps chief among
these left-of-center cele-
brants was Washington Post
columnist Richard Cohen,
who wrote "if a foolish con-
sistency is the hobgoblin of
a little mind, then Norman
Podhoretz has a mind as big
as all outdoors... With con-
summate gall disguised as
touching humility, he has
crossed a line he himself
drew, erasing it to suit his
intellectual convenience."
Mr. Cohen's disdain is
echoed in Commentary's let-
ters column this month.
Alfred J. Moses, president of
the American Jewish
Committee, scolds Mr.
Podhoretz for "not offering
