ext Tuesday, between
30 and 40 teen-agers
will gather at the
Max M. Fisher
Building to do what youth
their age do best: hog the
phones.
But don't tell them to
hang up because they'll be
making calls for the 1993
Allied Jewish Campaign.
Days of Decision, a final
phonathon for pledges,
begins this Sunday. On
Tuesday, members of local
youth groups and partici-
pants in Federation's
Youth Campaign will help
raise money for the Jewish
community here and
abroad. They benefit, too,
through youth groups, the
Jewish Community Center
and Camp Tamarack,
which also receive
Campaign allocations.
The Campaign now
stands at a little more than
$23.3 million. Leaders of
the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit hope
to secure 800 new gifts —
double the number pledged
during last year's Days of
Decision.
Though the Federation
determines agencies' allo-
cations on the basis of
money pledged by the end
of Days of Decision, leaders
emphasize that contribu-
tions to the 1993 Campaign
can be made after June 17.
Volunteers for the five-
day pledge drive hope to
boost Campaign coffers by
contacting local Jews who
have not been solicited yet
this year. More than 500
volunteer slots exist, and
more callers are needed,
said Ellen Labes, who

chairs Days of Decision
with Irwin Alterman.
Danny Harold, a senior
at Andover High School in
Bloomfield Township, has
participated in Federa-
tion's Youth Campaign for
three years. The former
member of B'nai B'rith
Youth Organization hopes
to make phone calls again
this week.
"I've benefited a great
deal (from taking part in
past phonathons)," he said.
"I've enjoyed the hands-on
experience. It wasn't
always easy. There were
some people who were very
interested in listening to us
talk about how Federation
serves the community and
some people who weren't
interested at all."
Campaign associate
Andrea Polk said adults
and youth make the Max
Fisher Building an "ener-
gized environment" during
Days of Decision. Teen-
agers have a knack for
solicitations, because of
their enthusiasm.
"They'll get off the phone
and run around the table
telling the others what
they got," she said.
Other organizations,
including the boards of
Resettlement Service and
Agency for Jewish
Education, also will partic-
ipate. Days of Decision
planners encourage indi-
viduals, unaffiliated with a
group, to pitch in, too.
"We really need people to
man the phones," Mrs.
Labes said. "We need peo-
ple who are committed to
the survival of the Jewish
community." 0
