Harry Gruenberg and Deanne Ginns-Gruenberg are the masters of
the Self Esteem Shop.

one was ever happy.
People complained about
everything, including
leaky faucets.
Now, on a daily basis,
the Gruenbergs order
from 250 different pub-
lishers. They seek out
specialty publications
that may not be available
elsewhere in the commu-
nity.
"We don't have compe-
tition," Ms. Ginns-
Gruenberg said, adding
that a few specialty shops
carry parenting books.
Another, Recovery World
in Pontiac, exclusively
carries material for those
going through the recov-
ery process.
The Self-Esteem Shop
is a first in Michigan, but
one of many related ven-
tures in the country.
California, home to Dr.
Canfield and Dr.
Nathaniel Branden, who
pioneered the self-help
movement more than 30
years ago, has been lead-
ing the self-esteem move-
ment for decades.
Others are beginning
to write books. More con-
ferences are under way,
and educators have
gained interest in the
subject, according to offi-
cials of the Southern
California-based, 10,000-
member National Council
For Self-Esteem.
"When I began writing
about self-esteem, it was
not a subject being talked
about," Dr. Branden said.
"Today, everybody is talk-

ing about it. My fear is
that a very important
idea will become trivial-
ized."
The Gruenbergs view
themselves as conduits to
self-awareness. They want
to help people.
Dr. Powell believes the
physical problems of 25
percent of those seeking
medical help actually are
caused by mental afflic-
tion.
In addition, two-thirds
of all office visits to family
physicians are due to
stress-related problems,
Dr. Powell said. And 10
percent of the U.S. popula-
tion has some kind of pho-
bia. Most common: public
speaking.

The Self-Esteem
Shop has sold
50,000 books.

His 1990 book, A Year of
Health Hints, sold 225,000
copies. It since has been
published in Spanish,
Chinese and Portuguese.
"I think people are real-
izing that self-esteem is
the basis for the kind of
person you are and how
you function in the world,"
said Mary Ellen Quesada,
the Self-Esteem Shop
manager who runs office
and school seminars.
"Even schools are realizing
that if kids feel better
about themselves, they
will turn out better; they
will perform well in school
and they will do better in
their careers." El
