n arch of pastel col-
ored balloons sur-
rounded nine tiny
chairs, each occupied
by a graduate wearing a
blue paper mortarboard.
Dressed in an olive green
suit and tie, Charlie Banks
stepped forward to proudly
accept his graduation cer-
tificate and medal for best
swimmer.
Charlie was one of nine
students graduating from
the Maple-Drake Jewish
Community Center morn-
ing kindergarten on June
4. He is the only black stu-
dent in the class.
His parents, Floyd and
Patricia Banks, videotaped
the commencement cere-
monies, which included
singing English and
Hebrew songs and awards
honoring each student.
"We chose this school
because it expresses the
same values that we do,"
Mrs. Banks said. "The cur-
riculum has a lot of variety
— spiritual, athletic and
the basics. I think kids
need to be exposed to many
types of people and
thoughts."
Charlie will be enrolled
in the first grade at
Wooddale Elementary in
Farmington Hills in the
fall.
Nitzan Maas will be fur-
ther away from her friends.

her awards.

Her family is moving back
to Jerusalem.
Nitzan was awarded
"most dependable." She
said the things she liked
best about JCC kinder-
garten were art projects,
swimming lessons and doll
corner (a part of the room
set up like a house).
Her mother, Sivan Maas,
was impressed with the
JCC's program.
"Pre-school programs are
quite good in Israel. This
was the unknown," Mrs.
Maas said. "I liked the
Jewish education Nitzan
received here. She learned
about the holidays and
Shabbat and came home
with stories and songs. She
looks forward to what she
can add to celebrations at
home."
Such statements please
Sue Frey.
Ms. Frey has been teach-
ing the kindergarten class
at the JCC for 11 years.
"Most parents send their
kids to this program for its
Jewish content," Ms. Frey
said. "However, there is a
good student-to-teacher
ratio here — about one to
five. There's a lot of indi-
vidual attention and help.
The program is small
enough so we can adapt to
the students' needs rather
than forcing them to adapt
to ours."
