Judith Adler, Birmingham
A majority of candidates
clearly supported the sepa-
ration of church and state
by citing personal beliefs or
the Supreme Court decision
in Lee vs. Weisman, which
held prayer at commence-
ment exercises as unconsti-
tutional.
Yet Steve Hannah, a can-
didate for one open seat in
the Birmingham school dis-
trict, challenged the cur-
rent rulings.
"The Constitution pre-
vents the state from estab-
lishing a religion and from
interfering with the free
exercise of religion. In
attempting to enforce the
first prohibition, the courts
have unreasonably inter-
fered with the individual's
right to worship. Our fore-
fathers did not intend to
totally isolate the schools
from God or prevent all
interaction between the
church and the state," Mr.
Hannah said.
Mr. Hannah faces
Charles Hodgkins and
Judith Adler.
Mr. Hodgkins is advocat-
ing fiscal discipline and
parental rights and respon-
sibilities in the schools. He
opposes "warm and fuzzy"
programs, large school
assemblies and other "dis-
ruptions which consume
ever-shrinking school
days."
Ms. Adler focuses on
downsizing facilities and
fiscal planning to manage
costs. She opposes vouchers
for private schools and sup-
ports "education that pro-
motes thinking and prob-
lem-solving skills."
Candidates split over the
issue of appropriate teach-
ing matter. All agreed big-
otry, hate and personal
opinion had no place in the
classroom. However, sever-
al candidates — some who
identify themselves as "lib-
Beth Borson, West Bloomfield
eral" — suggested sexual
orientation and environ-
mentalism be left out of
curricula.
Sharon Lipton, a West
Bloomfield school district
candidate, suggested a
more tolerant policy.
"All content needs to be
presented in a developmen-
tally appropriate manner
in an atmosphere of objec-
tive inquiry within the lim-
its of the laws and the age
of the students," Ms.
Lipton said.
Ms. Lipton and Beth
Danto Borson are running
unoppose-d for the two
available seats in West
Bloomfield. Both candi-
dates stressed the impor-
tance of voting as an exer-
cise of civil duties and to
avoid the possibility of a
victory for a write-in candi-
date with an unknown
agenda.
A few candidates feel the
Michigan Model is also
inappropriate.
The Michigan Model, a
kindergarten - 12th-grade
basic health program, has
been attacked in the past
for teaching students con-
cepts like closing their eyes
and breathing for 10 sec-
onds when they are angry.
It has been called the
teaching of meditation and
religion.
Most candidates, like
Mindy Nathan of
Bloomfield Hills, have a
more tolerant view of the
program.
"The Michigan Model for
health education is a good
one. Our district does not
use the Michigan Model,
but some curriculum pieces
are similar. I support
reviewing the Michigan
Model for our school dis-
trict as a component of a
comprehensive health edu-
cation approach," Ms.
Nathan said.
