Ms. Goldsmith applied for
the grants in March. During
resident council meetings, she
announced the proposal; she
advised members of the senior
citizen community to draft
support letters to Michigan
Sens. Donald Riegle and Carl
Levin and U.S. Rep. Sander
Levin.
"These grants will help en-
sure that the residents con-
tinue an independent lifestyle
that maintains individual dig-
nity," Mr. Riegle said.
By last month, she had nu-
merous calls from staff mem-
bers of the offices of Sen.
Riegle, Sen. Levin and Rep.
Levin, who said it was a pos-
itive sign, yet somewhat un-
usual that they each would
receive about 100 letters from
the would-be grant recipients.
The three political leaders
drafted letters of support to
HUD officials on behalf of
Jewish Federation Apart-
ments.
"The seniors really rallied
behind this," Ms. Goldsmith
said. "It is a great program,
and it saves the government
in the long run by keeping se-
niors in their homes a little
bit longer."

Anheuser-Busch
Makes Donation

New York (JTA) — The
Anheuser-Busch Foundation
has announced a total dona-
tion of $400,000 in grants to
Jewish federations to sup-
port alcohol-abuse preven-
tion and education.
The money will be divided
among 10 Jewish federa-
tions and the Washington of-
fice of the Anti-Defamation
League.
Anheuser-Busch Com-
panies Inc. operates a
brewery in the metropolitan
area of each recipient fed-
eration, except for New
York's UJA-Federation. The
company is based in St.
Louis.
"Since its earliest days,
Anheuser-Busch has been
deeply concerned with
human needs and the quali-
ty of life," Anheuser- Busch
board chairman August A.
Busch III said. "With these
donations, Anheuser-Busch
will increase the number of
people it touches in these
communities."
The New York federation
was the first to receive its
grant, which came to
$85,000.

In a financial environment where the word "friendly" can quickly change to
"fierce;' up can go down, and a bull can turn into a bear, investors tend to scare a little easier.
Of course when an investment management firm consistently offers
proven investment strategies, innovative thinking, and a track record over market cycles,
people often see things a little differently.
