working with? It's the question
I'm asked most often and I still
don't have a glib response. But
part of it is that I am excited by
the prospect of a new challenge,
helping to shape a Jewish
newspaper in New York, where
one-third of American Jewry
lives. And part of it is that it
simply feels right at this point
in my life.
The decision was a tough one
to make, though, and I came to
appreciate the wisdom of
Gonzo, of Muppets fame, who
once said: "I want to go there. I
just don't want to leave here."
I was interviewed recently by
a Baltimore Sun reporter on my
leaving. The toughest question
he asked was, if I could have
one wish for the Baltimore Jew-
ish community, what would
that wish be?
I said that I wished the Jews
of Baltimore could learn to lis-
ten to, and appreciate, each oth-
er a bit more, from across the
Great Divide of denomination-
al difference. The same holds
true for Detroit.
In this job, I could spend time
with Reform Jews working tire-
lessly on providing food and
shelter for the homeless, then
accessories and
gifts... visit

worth it. Our

go off and talk to a serious Con-
servative feminist Judaic schol-
ar, and then observe Orthodox
Jews doing a wide range of
mitzvah work, from visiting the
sick to teaching Torah. And
what saddened me was the re-
alization that, most likely, these
people would never meet. They
each do their own good and im-
portant work, ignorant or sus-
picious of — even hostile to —
The Other.
It's the job of a Jewish news-
paper to help bridge those gaps
among us, and it's our job —
each of us — to try to look for
the common threads that bind
us as Jews rather than those
that would unravel us.
That's why, on a good day,
this is more than a job — it's a
calling. And that's why I've de-
cided to pass on my "Last Issue"
file to my colleagues, knowing
that no task is ever complete
and that there will always be
others to carry on.
Thanks for all you've given
me, more than words can say. 0
Madrid (JTA) — The cen-
turies-old synagogue in the
southern Spanish city of
Cordoba, long in existence as
only a museum of a vanished
Jewish community, briefly
came to life on Sunday to
celebrate the wedding
ceremony of a Canadian
Jewish couple.
Some 501 years after its
closure following the expul-
sion of the Jews of Spain,
Edward Mirsky and Rebeca
Romero Varo of Montreal
were wed in the small, or-
nate Moorish-style syn-
agogue, built in 1315 and
closed in 1492.
The local media gave the
event wide coverage.
The couple chose the site
in Andalusia because it was
the most convenient place to
gather all their relatives.
The family of the bride, the
former Maria Jose Romero
Varo, is from Aguilar de la
Frontera, a =town near Ccir-.
doba. _She converted to
Judaism from Catholicism.
The synagogue in 'Cordoba
— the city is the birthplace
of the great Jewish
philosopher Maimonides —
is one of three in Spain re-
maining from the time of the
expulsion of the Jews in
1492. The other two are in
Toledo.
The small Cordoba syn-
agogue consists of a single
square room with a women's
gallery. The upper walls re-
tain a' delicate artistry in
plaster.
Used as a hospital and sub-
ject to a series of reforms
after the expulsion, in 1885
the synagogue was declared
a national monument and
restored to its present form
between 1928 and 1930.
The family brought Rabbi
Abraham Feffer of Montreal
to preside.
Some 60 guests — the
maximum the small syn-
agogue could accommodate
— traveled from Germany,
Switzerland, Ecuador and
the United States to attend.
Other guests included
_Israeli Ambassador Ya'acov
Cohen and his Canadian
counterpart, Jean-Pierre
Juneau.
Invitations were sent to
the Spanish royal family,
who were unable to attend.
