Rabbi Saperstein is focus-
ing on the "political argu-
ment" of the debate, not on
the substance of Ms.
Guinier's legal writings.
Nevertheless, there are
signs that pressure on Ms.
Guinier and the administra-
tion is mounting. Last week,
the National Jewish
Democratic Council sent a
letter to White House
Counsel Bernard Nussbaum
calling for further study of
Ms. Guinier's record.
There are also signs that
several major Jewish orga-
nizations will soon publicly
oppose the nomination.

Fighting For
Egyptian Aid
Speaking of foreign aid,
what are Egypt's friends in
the U.S. doing to protect
that country's more than $2
2 billion in aid? According to
Capitol Hill sources, the
answer is not much.
While pro-Israel groups
have marshalled their
resources to protect the big
aid allotments to Israel and
Egypt, pro-Arab groups do
not been much of a presence
in the debate.
"We don't see them," said
a Democratic legislator
active in the foreign aid
process. "The impression I
get is that Arab-American
groups are not particularly
pro-Egyptian. And that to
most of them, cutting aid to
Israel is a higher priority
than protecting aid to
Egypt, even though one
could make the case that
Egypt has a particularly
desperate need for
American help these days."
Pro-Israel forces are not
fighting for Egyptian aid out
of charity. By emphasizing
aid to both countries,
Israel's friends underscore
the important point that
U.S. aid helps the peace
process and that cuts could
further destabilize the sen-
sitive negotiations.
