UJF Nominates Jack Robinson Days Of Decision Phonathons Planned Federation Fund Names Chairman Jack Robinson Leonard Smith Jack A. Robinson has been nominated to serve a second year as president of the United Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit, whose annual meeting and reception is set for 5 p.m. June 9 at the Max M. Fisher Building. The UJF works with Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit to oversee the maintenance of communal properties and manages endowment funds for future communal needs. The UJF funds enhance those raised by the Allied Jewish Campaign. Mr. Robinson will deliver the UJF annual report. Election and installation of officers and board members will take place, and recent donors to the Federation Endowment Fund will be honored. Leonard W. Smith, presi- dent and trustee of the Skillman Foundation, will make the keynote address. The Skillman Found- ation, which has assets of $365 million, makes $16 million in grants each year. Within the Detroit area, the Foundation focuses on strengthening major insti- tutions in the areas of child and family welfare, educa- tion, basic human needs, culture and the arts. Over the years, several Jewish Federation agencies have received Skillman grants. A recipient of the Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award for Distinguished Community Service, Mr. Robinson is a past vice president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and was chairman of the 1984 Allied Jewish Campaign, He also was a founding board member and presi- dent of Jewish Federation Apartments. Mr. Robinson serves on the boards of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Friends of Hebrew University, Holocaust Memorial Center, Wayne State University Center for Judaic Studies and the Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan. In addition, he is a member of the NAACP and co-chairman of the Greater Detroit Interfaith Roundtable. There is a charge for the reception. Hermelin has been appointed chairman of the Major Gifts Com- mittee of the Jewish Federation's Federated Endowment Fund (FEF). He succeeds Mandell L. Berman in the lead role of educating donors about the role and mission of the fund in the communi- ty. The FEF's goals are to ensure that community service needs can be met in the future and to enable the creation of special and innovative programs to meet chang- ing needs. Vice president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and a former Allied Jewish Campaign chairman, Mr. Hermelin also is national vice-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal. He chaired the Michigan Miracle Mission to Israel. International campaign chairman of State of Israel Bonds, he is active in many other national and international organi- zations including United Synagogue for Conserv- ative Judaism, World ORT Union, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. 9141-i_ List Joel Tauber, national chair- man of the United Jewish Appeal; David Hermelin, chairman of the Michigan Miracle Mission; and Lawrence Jackier, treasurer of the Jewish Federation, will meet with Allied Jewish Campaign volun- teers during Days of Decision. On June 13 Mr. Tauber will kick off the week-long phonathons by thanking the volunteers who are reach- ing out to fellow Detroiters each day on behalf of the Campaign during the June 13-17 effort. He will discuss the needs in Israel as it resettles 400,000 Jewish refugees and provides a life- line for the remnant Jewish communities of Eastern Europe. On June 15 at 6:30 p.m., Mr. Hermelin will address the needs of many recently unemployed people, seniors and others at risk who look to Federation's helping agencies for assistance. On June 16 at 6:30 p.m., Mr. Jackier will talk about the community and how the Campaign links Detroiters together with Jews in Israel and around the world. During Days of Decision, members of congregations and community organiza- tions will join volunteers reaching out to fellow Detroiters to involve them in the Campaign. Many organizations have scheduled times to volun- teer at phonathons at the Max M. Fisher Building. On June 13, the Jewish Federation Apartments leadership will join volun- teers on the phones in the morning and afternoon. Members and leaders from Adat Shalom Synagogue, the Jewish Federation Young Adult Division, UJA Young Leadership Cabin- ets, Chazak Mission, Jewish Vocational Service, Fresh Air Society and the Jewish Community Center will join the effort on June 14. On June 15, volunteers will come from Akiva Hebrew Day School, Congregation Shaarey Zedek and Hillel Day School. Jewish Community Council leaders and mem- bers of Temple Israel, YAD, the Youth Campaign and BBYO will join the effort on June 16. The leadership of Re- settlement Service, the Agency for Jewish Edu- cation and Jewish Family Service will help close out the week of phonathons on June 17.
