There's a painful lack of root- edness within the Jewish com- munity. There's a lack of knowledge among our Jewish leaders on questions of ethics, thought and history. And if our adults don't know, our children aren't going to know either." Mrs. Cardin pointed to as- similation as a major reason for the drop-off in American Jewish consciousness. She added that the involvement of federal dollars and programs in social action causes once to- tally funded by Jews also had an assimilating effect. "We started to move away from lifestyle Judaism," she said. "Many Jews remember a time when there was no question that the person they would date or marry was an- other Jew. Those are the old days. Now, you hear so many people talk about how their grandmother lit Sabbath can- dles. The question is, why don't they light them as well? We've made the spirit of Judaism more of a check-writ- ing affair than ever before. We didn't make Jewish knowl- edge a criterion for leadership. "Yes, there are many Jewish leaders who don't have any other claim to their posi- tion than money," she contin- ued. "They don't have knowledge." She said the knowledge is- sue is a burning one for her because she worries that a Jewish family that once drew its strength from traditions and knowledge is missing out on what previous generations used for cohesion. Also, Ms. Cardin said it was the knowl- edge that "made us different." Ms. Cardin said Jews of all denominations should realize that there is a shared culture, a common destiny and a be- lief in one God that holds us together. She also said there is a need to understand that the Jewish role is to contin- ue working in other socially active ways. She mentioned the war in Yugoslavia as something that Jews should speak out on. Jews should be counted on and given recognition, not just because they give money but because they serve as well. The great Jewish leaders were never identified, she said, by their bank accounts. It was, instead, their actions that brought recognition. "I am not pessimistic," she Shoshana Cardin said. "We've been shaping great leaders for thousands of years. I just don't want the fu- ture generations to forget where our great leaders came from, and why they worked so hard. This is my fear, and it should be a motivation." It was over a year ago that Ms. Cardin faced perhaps the biggest challenge of her Jewish communal life. American Jews were arriving in Washington, D.C., to ask congressional leaders and the president to approve $10 bil- lion in loan guarantees for Israel. Former President Bush told the media he was being pressured by thousands of lob- byists for Israel. The next day, the president received thou- sands of letters of hate, con- gratulating him for putting down the Jews. Ms. Cardin, as chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, met Mr. Bush and sternly told him what he had unleashed. "As soon as I got in the room and started, I was not nervous," she said. "It was not Shoshana Cardin dealing with the president at that point. It was the American Jewish community." President Clinton, though in office only a short while, hasn't done much to prove himself to Ms. Cardin. "I am disappointed," she said. "I don't see the president focusing on any of the issues he campaigned about I'm con- cerned about the Middle East peace process. It will require stronger involvement from the United States, but he hasn't really done anything. I'm con- cerned about the hate in the world that leads to violence. Again, I think the world is waiting to see what this pres- ident will do." 0
