AIM

20 • SUMMER 1993 • STYLE

This summer, the accessories
can make the difference. You
can feel groovy by adding a few
love beads, wrapping your head
or slipping into a pair of clogs.
Or you can look like you just
stepped off the boat in your
yachting cap, scarf tied around
the neck, gold chain belt and
wing-tip oxfords.
Perhaps you see yourself as
more of the romantic type,
dreaming of strolling through
an English garden filled with
roses.
If relaxed sophistication is
more your style, try catching
the waves of accessories from
raffia handbags to batik scarves
to carved wood bangles.
There's something for every
fashion personality. Take your
pick:
THE AGE OF AQUARIUS
Think funky. And think back
20 years ago, when free-think-
ing hippies thought of nothing
but love, peace and flowers that
had power.
In the 90s, accessories influ-
enced by the 70s have retro-
modern appeal.
• Long strands of beads —
glass, plastic, wood and metals.
• Signs of the times —
peace symbols, crosses, hearts,
happy faces, flowers and astro-
logical signs in pins and
charms.
• Chokers at the neck.
• Head wraps — scarves,
bandanas, crocheted squares,
fringed shawls and blankets.
• Crocheted berets.
• Bold rings.
• Fishnet tights.
• Hoop earrings.
• Enameled jewelry.
• Patent leather belts, bags,
shoes.
• Hip-slung belts (for all
those bell bottoms).
• Knapsacks.
• Cat-eye and granny glass-
es.
• Birkenstock sandals.
• Clogs.
• Platform shoes and san-
dals.
NAUTICAL LOOKS
These are the classics. Every
spring, the nauticals float back
in style. This year, there are
several takes on the old
favorites — from the French
Riveria to the Hamptons to
North Africa. The accessories
inspired by these seasides of

the past have lots of timeless
appeal.
• Scarves tied at the neck.
• Yachting caps, berets,
safari hats.
• Hats with cording and
braid.
• Emblems and crest pins.
• Structured totes and bags.
• Vintage-framed glasses.
• Ropes of pearls, gold link
chains and charm bracelets.
• Wide belts with chains and
lots of hardware.
• Wing-tip oxfords.
• T-straps
• Spectators.
• Golf and tennis shoes.
THE ROMANTICS
Feminine and nostalgic. The
accessories that belong in this
category are reminiscent of
romantic Victorians or
Southern belles.
• Sheer, chiffon scarves and
sashes.
• Lace jabots.
• Oversize straw hats, some
with flowers.
• Vintage jewelry.
• Lace hose.
• Pearls, silver jewelry, pas-
tel stones, floral jewelry and
cameos.

THE EASTERN WAVE
News from faraway lands
provides the inspiration for this
trend in accessories. It's a eth-
nic combination of Oriental,
African and South Seas.
• Carved woods and metals
in necklaces, bracelets, ear-
rings.
• Coolie hats.
• Raffia handbags, natural
straw bags, hard-clutch bags.
• Fringed scarves and
shawls.
• Big pareos, sarongs in ikat
and batik prints.
• Large floral-printed
scarves.

shells, jade and faux ivory.
