A Grove of 1,000 Trees has
been planted in the American
Independence Park outside the
city of Jerusalem, to memorial-
ize Paul Warren Sonkin, son of
Dr. Sheldon and Sydelle Sonkin
and brother of Rebecca and
Joel.
Paul was sixteen when he
died August 2, 1992.
Paul was a student at
Andover High School where he
achieved high Academic
Standing. He was active in sev-
eral sports, especially soccer
and basketball. He had been
preparing for the Maccabi
Games at the time of his prema-
ture death. He had his Bar
Mitzvah and then his confirma-
tion three years later at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
Eli Scherr, President of
Jewish National Fund, stated
that, "The response by friends
and members of the community
to memorialize Paul Sonkin was
overwhelming. He was a
beloved member of his family
and endeared himself during his
brief lifetime to so many."
Dr. Sonkin remarked that, "I
can think of no better living
tribute to Paul's memory than
the establishment of this
Grove."
His mother, Sydelle, stated
that, "Our son's memory will
never leave us and words cannot
express our feelings. Knowing
that the trees planted in Israel
will bear Paul's name is of some
comfort."
This Grove was created
through the generous contribu-
tions of Friends, Family and
especially Paul's Grandparents,
Dr. Morris and Regina Becker
of Aventura, Florida.

agency responsible for
afforestation and land reclama-
tion in Israel.

Israeli Health Tip:
The Healing Waters
MOLLY AROST STAUB SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
S
ince biblical times,
when lepers were ad-
vised to bathe their
skin, Israel's healing
waters have been acclaimed.
The Romans, never ones to
overlook a good thing, built a
spa around the 17 natural
mineral hot springs when the
town of Tiberias was founded
in the first century C.E.
Cleopatra, always in the
market for beauty enhance-
ments, imported water from
the Yesha Springs ,for cos-
metic purposes.
Today, vacationers seeking
relaxation or beauty treat-
ment, plus ill persons seeking
cures for their ailments, flock
to the tiny country's numer-
ous centers offering help.
Tiberias in northern Israel
is studded with hot springs
which according to legend,
King Solomon created by
commanding demons to go
underground and heat the
cold waters. The Tiberias Hot
Springs Health Center is a
vast complex treating rheu-
matoid arthritis, lumbago,
sciatica and muscular di-
seases. The percentage of
sodium chlorate, calcium
compounds, and radioactive
qualities render the water
hypothermic, hypertonic and
radioactive.
The restorative powers of
piloma, a therapeutic mud-
like mineral sediment, are
also touted. Visitors at
several spas even buy
packages of mud to take home
for skin beautification.
Here, an enormous indoor
pool and outdoor pool both
overlook the Sea of Galilee.
Ultrasound and physio-
therapy are available, along
with medical supervision and
solarium treatment for
psoriasis. Special treatment is
designed for paralyzed in-
dividuals; professionals gain-
ed large-scale experience
handling war victims.
Across the street remain
the ruins of an ancient spa,
attesting to the waters' at-
tributes in ancient times.
Visitors might opt to stay at
the Galei Kinneret Hotel, the
area's top-rated hostelry, with
107 rooms and a gourmet
restaurant.
Guests enjoying the outdoor
pool or the gardens will spot
some fortress ruins. But 13
miles away at Hamat Gader,
ruins so vast and detailed —
restored Roman baths, used
from the 2nd to 9th centuries
— are considered among the
world's most impressive
archaeologically.
This bath complex was
already referred to as
"famous" in the 3rd century
by Origen. Today's adherents
mainly visit for bone and
muscle problems. The gigan-
tic 140-foot-long outdoor pool
is fed by the spring and the
water returns to the Yarmuk
River. The kibbutz, which in-
cludes massage facilities and
bath house, can accommodate
7,000 guests at one time!
At Israel's southern end,
numerous spas are clustered
around the Dead Sea. Here,
the availability of mineral-
laden hot springs and thera-
peutic mud are aided by the
climate where the high at-
mospheric pressure 1,300 feet
below sea level results in a
10-percent higher level of ox-
ygen than at sea level — the
world's highest. There's also
a higher concentration of
long-wave or UVA light than
in other parts of the world.
Cancer-causing UVB rays are
naturally filtered out, so pa-
tients may remain in the sun.
Whatever the time or finan-
cial constraints, Israel offers
a variety of accommodations
for those seeking help. ❑
