why modern-day Israel operates
from a survivalist's mentality,
positioned in the midst of neigh-
bors who historically have
vowed Israel's destruction re-
acts the way it does whenever
there is even the perception of
threat from enemies outside or
within her borders.
"When you've been through
the kind of hell the Jews expe-
rienced, you never want to for-
get for fear it could happen
again."
Mr. Miles respects the muse-
um; he laments the absence
"anywhere in the world" of mu-
seums or memorials to slavery
and legalized segregation.
Similar to Jews' insistence
that the Holocaust never be for-
gotten, Mr. Miles says, "Ours is
a story that need telling and re-
telling lest we forget. One of the
sad realities is that because it's
a story not welcomed by Amer-
ica and because it's a story that
many African-Americans would
rather not remember, it is 'his-
tory' lost to our children...
"Maybe one day, we will have
enough courage, unity and
sense to build a memorial to
America's shame and for our col-
lective memory..."

What Do
Women Want?

Two Baltimore women are fea-
tured in an article in Lilith
that's critical of Jewish organi-
zations' policies toward Jewish
women philanthropists:
• Brenda Lipitz, president of
the Women's division of the As-
sociated: Jewish Community
Federation of Baltimore.
The article's author, Susan
Weidman Schaefer, says Ms.
Lipitz was "outraged that exec-
utive directors (the paid heads)
of women's divisions of Jewish
federations were not considered
part of each federation's top
management team."
"Spurred by her advocacy,"
Ms. Schneider writes, the As-
sociated's women's division pro-
fessional "is now part of the
executive team, and support
staff has been added to the
women's program. But Lipitz's
success has not yet been dupli-
cated in many cities and her
strong advocacy 'takes its toll,'
she said. 'It's very hard fighting
an establishment that has been
in place since the beginning of
time."'
• Lee Meyerhoff Handler,
chair of the Associated's strate-
gic planning committee.
Jewish federations, she said,
undervalue women's giving,
which is not "plus giving," but a
substantial part of any commu-
nity campaign.
The second part of the article
will appear in Lilith's summer
issue. ❑
