"My family learned about the Heatherwood lifestyle... Mixed Season For Hartman HARLAN C. ABBEY SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS M ike Hartman, one of three Jewish players in the Na- tional Hockey League, is looking forward to the 1993-94 season. Hartman, who at one time held the Buffalo Sabres' season-record for penalty minutes (316), is fifth on the team's all-time penalty minute totals (890) during three full seasons and part of two others. The native of Detroit was traded to Winnipeg in Oc- tober 1991 in a five-player deal. Then he was selected by the expansion Tampa Bay franchise for the 1992-93 season before being traded recently to the New York Rangers. As an indication of the Na- tional Hockey League's em- phasis on clean play, Hart- man had only 160 penalty minutes this season, his lowest total in his five-year NHL career. He also had four goals and four assists, and a lot of ups-and-downs. "I was hurt in November, suffering a separated shoulder, sore ribs and a cut wrist. I fell and Luke Richard- son of Edmonton stepped on me. I was out three weeks and it bothered me for a while when I returned?' The other two Jewish players in the NHL are Mat- tieu Schneider, the Montreal Canadians' highest-scoring defenseman who has been in- jured for part of the season; and Ronnie Stern, rugged winger better known for his muscle than his scoring touch, who plays for the Calgary Flames. Schneider grew up in New Jersey, Stern in Montreal. Despite Hartman's reputa- tion as a physical player often involved in fights, he's "never, in my career, heard an anti- Semitic remark?' In training camp at Tampa, he was with former Sabre David Littman, another Jewish player who spent some time with the Sabres, but was with Rochester for nearly all of his three profes- sional seasons. Littman, a goalie, spent most of the season with Tam- pa's Atlanta farm club in the Eastern League. He was called up to Tampa the day Hartman was ,traded to the Rangers, and gave up seven goals in his first NHL game for his new team. ❑ - • • 9 1t• ...and now m "I haven't had this much fin in years!
