YAD Meeting
Set At DIA

Young Adults
Beautify City

"The Passionate Observer:
Photographs by Carl Van
Vechten" will be on display
at the Jewish Federation
Young Adult Division's
55th annual meeting 6:30
p.m. June 15 at the Detroit
Institute of Arts.
The evening's program
will feature the election
and installation of officers
and board members and an
update on YAD by outgoing
President Hannan Lis.
Elizabeth Kanter was nom-
inated as president for the
1993-94 Campaign year.
The exhibition includes
75 vintage photos drawn
from the Hallmark Photo-
graphic Collection, a pro-
ject of Hallmark Cards,
Inc.
Mr. Van Vechten turned
from writing to photogra-
phy in 1932. He created a
visual catalogue of major
American cultural figures
from the 1920s to the
1940s. He captured on film
the writers and performers
associated with the Harlem
renaissance, such as Paul
Robeson, Cab Calloway and
Billie Holiday.
A dessert reception will
be held in the Kresge
Courtyard. Contributors to
the 1993 Allied Jewish
Campaign are eligible to
attend, and there is a
charge.
For information or reser-
vations by June 4, call the
Young Adult Division
office, 642-4260.

Young adults will join a
beautification project of
houses in the inner city
and at residential care
homes, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
June 6.
Participants in the
Volunteer Extravaganza,
sponsored by the Jewish
Federation's Young Adult
Division, will assist in
the landscaping of four
Core City Neighborhood
houses and 12 JARC
(Jewish Association for
Residential Care) group
homes.
Volunteers will meet at
the Max M. Fisher
Building before proceed-
ing to their assignments.
These include planting
trees, shrubs and flowers
at a Core City site, or
planting flowers, raking
gardens and pruning
trees at a JARC facility.
Participants also are
asked to bring flats of
flowers, seeds or garden-
ing equipment.
To participate in the
Volunteer Extravaganza
or for information, call
Andrea Polk, 642-4260.
