least, the Middle East peace process has been relegated to the back burner by two of the parties involved: the American foreign-policy establishment remains pre- occupied with Bosnia, and Mr. Rabin is trying to extri- cate himself from the threat of his coalition falling apart over the Shas party- Shulamit Aloni squabble. Beneath the surface, how- ever, more ominous currents may be running even now. Judging by the media, large and even influential sectors of the Palestinian public have already given up on the process, Israel's commitment to it appears to be growing increasingly ambivalent, and the U.S. seems to be backing away from responsibility for its advancement. Perhaps all three sides should be reminded of Murphy's Law of Middle Eastern politics: "Left to their own devices, things only get worse." Likud Rejects Gaza Plan Tel Aviv (JTA) — The oppo- sition Likud party has roundly rejected a proposal by one of its more moderate figures for Israel to withdraw unilaterally from the Gaza Strip and grant Pa- lestinian autonomy there. The issue came up at a convention of Likud's 3,500- member Central Committee. Knesset member Ronni Milo, a former police min- ister, repeated his support for the "Gaza first" concept, in which Israel would not wait to negotiate a com- prehensive autonomy plan with Palestinians, but would unilaterally pull out of Gaza. But the convention's For- eign Affairs and Security Committee rejected the pro- posal amid strong criticism. Former Defense Minister Ariel Sharon, one of the more vociferous opponents to the plan, asked Milo rhetor- ically if he knew there were a million "anti-Israel Pales- tinians" in Gaza and if he was prepared to allow them to form the foundations for an independent Palestinian state sworn to replace Israel. The Likud convention, which opened in the Golan Heights, in a gesture of sup- port to settlers there, moved to Tel Aviv for its first day of working sessions. )00 @, flIZA/ „....." * -•. 1 Oci 4 un Da Tour the new JPM! 1%, itI r .*I 4 1 1 0) ilf,. iv..
