grandparents of their legal
rights.
"I've worked on more
than 650 cases and we've
won 90 percent of them,"
Mr. Victor said. "These are
questions of rights to
access or visitation of the
grandchildren in the event
of divorce, death or separa-
tion of the parents.
"With every divorce or
custody battle there is a
potential for up to four
grandparents to have the
opportunity to see or not
see their grandchildren."
Mr. Victor will give his
presentation much the way
he does other talks -
informing the audience on
current and pending laws,
then answering questions.
In addition, Mr. Victor will
tell grandparents of ways
to untangle sticky issues
without the help of an
attorney.
"This should not be
resolved in a courtroom,"
Mr. Victor said. "The com-
mon interest is the love of
a child. It's not about liti-
gation. It's about reuniting
families."
Mr. Victor will be joined
by attorney Richard Polk,
who will discuss the finan-
cial questions and obliga-
tions of giving assets to
grandchildren. A panel dis-
cussion regarding grand-
parenting and intermar-
riage will feature Rabbis
David Nelson, M. Robert
Syme and Rebbitzen
Nehama Glogower.
The June 1 lineup
includes Chicago Sun
Times syndicated colum-
nist Jeffrey Zaslow, Bloom-
field Hills librarian Susan
Barr and Sinai Hospital
pediatric nurse practition-
er Karen Moore.

Richard Victor

Ms. Moore will update
grandparents on practical
childcare.
"A lot has changed from
when most grandparents
raised their children, espe-
cially in areas of feeding
and toilet training," Ms.

"A lot has
changed from
when most
grandparents
raised their
children."

Moore said. "The thinking
among experts has changed
over the generations."
All three speakers will
discuss the perceived and
actual role of the grandpar-
ent.
"I hear from grandpar-
ents all the time. They
aren't so sure of their role
these days," Mr. Zaslow
said. "I tell them to do
what feels comfortable for
them. I tell them if they
don't want to just be a
babysitter - don't." 111

Masorti Event
At Shaarey Zedek

T

he new Detroit
Friends of the Masorti
(Conservative) Move-
ment in Israel will
host Rabbi Ehud Bandel
and Herschel Blumberg,
two spokesmen for the
movement, at a continen-
tal breakfast at Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek, 8
a.m. June 4.
Rabbi Bandel is the first
Israeli Conservative Rabbi
to be ordained in Israel. He
will review the present
challenge being brought in
the courts by the Masorti
Movement against the
monopoly held by the
Orthodox rabbinate over

religious freedom and the
performance of the rites of
passage in Jewish life.
Mr. Blumberg, president
of the Foundation for
Conservative Judaism, is a
past chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal. He
will update the activities
and progress of Conserv-
ative Judaism in Israel.
The breakfast and dis-
cussion are open to the
public. There is no charge,
and there will be no solici-
tation of funds. For infor-
mation, call the rabbi's sec-
retary at Shaarey Zedek,
