dian Summer roles, there
was a time when he let the
past slip away.
"I was like the Jack Bel-
ston character," said the
writer/director, who now has
an office at Disney. "I went
away for years and never
talked to any of the Tamak-
wa people.
"I went through a rough
period of my life, very simi-
lar to what he's depicted as
going through, and I came
around through faith about
8'/2 years ago.
Mr. Binder's return to
Tamakwa was at the urging
of a cousin, whose husband
had been killed in a car acci-
dent and whose experiences
were ultimately adapted into
the film. He went to the post-
camp session because he
thought she needed someone
to be with her.
"I came back to camp and
realized all the great things
I was taught and all the
great rules we lived our lives
by," he recalled. "These val-
ues really helped me go for a
lot of goals I wanted to see
come true in my life."
Since that time, Mr.
Binder visits the camp every
year just as he returns to
Michigan to visit family in-
cluding his mother, Judith
Trumbull.
His successes and attach-
ment to Tamakwa have in-
volved him in a program to
help set up scholarship funds
for youngsters who otherwise
might not be able to go to the
camp.
After he finishes touring to
promote Indian Summer,
Mr. Binder plans to take
some time off and enjoy be-
ing a new father. He and his
wife, Diane, now have a
daughter, Molly Catherine.
According to Molly's dad,
Camp Tamakwa is definite-
ly in her future.
"She has no choice in the
matter," he smiled. "She's go-
ing!"
