...then maybe you need to away to some gorgeous golfer's haven for a week of intense scrutiny and - A - = instruction. Hem's the ,guide to six of the nation's best golf camps.. r # have waited months for this moment The morning is bright, the grass glistens with dew. You tee your ball, grip your driver, and gaze down the first fairway of the legendary Pinehurst No. 2 Course, a course you've always dreamed of playing. You take a mighty swipe at the ball, and it carries high and far. But alas, it continues its trajectory over the trees lining the right side of the fairway, to land ignominiously amid a patch of wire grass— the plant equivalent of steel wool. Yes, there's one at Pinehurst, if you prefer pine trees to palms, and several in Florida and sunny California, if you don't. A few tips before packing your bags: • Before leaving for school, swing a club without wearing a glove a few minutes each day for several days to toughen your hands, and do a few stretches. • Be realistic about your goals. While a solid golf swing cannot be guaranteed, the founda- tion for one can be created at a reputable school. • If you're struggling with your game, don't plan on playing much golf— the idea is to learn something new, not tackle the course with your old swing. Be prepared to practice, practice, practice what you've learned when you get home. ›- by Brian McCallen STYLE • SUMMER 1993 • 5
