New Makes on
Aluminum

Long the favorite of poolside sun-
bathers, tubular aluminum frames,
outfitted with either a sling of PVC-
coated dacron netting or a series of
tightly wrapped vinyl straps, are
generally sleek in styling, light-
weight and easy to maintain. New
in the sling style is Tropitone's
Mariner II with padded slings and
high backs for a more comfortable
sit Tropitone also introduced a new
diagonal strap style in its Sum-
merhouse grouping. The diagonal
weave gives a traditional look to
materials most often associated
with contemporary lines. Although
aluminum is rustproof and frames
are powdercoated for a thick
durable finish, Tropitone design
manager Peter Homestead sug-
gests waxing the furniture sever-
al times a year with car wax to
protect colors from ultraviolet rays.
He recommends soapy water and
small amounts of bleach to clean
vinyl slings, and Spic' n' Span or fine
fabric cleaner for the acrylics (no
bleach). To clean straps, which can
mildew, a mix of one part ammo-
nia to three parts water is usually
effective, he adds, as is Feronclean,
a commercial vinyl cleaner. As for
strap and sling breakage and tears,
many can be repaired by the deal-
er.
An increasingly popular option,
wrought aluminum, sometimes
combined with cast aluminum, of-
fers the graceful styling of wrought
iron with the easy maintenance,
rust-proof qualities and lighter
weight of aluminum. Brown Jor-
dan is betting on the increased
popularity of wrought aluminum to
fuel sales of its stylish new
Barcelona, which incorporates the
five Olympic rings into its design
for an elegant neo-classical look.
In the heavier cast aluminum,
BarlowTyrie offers two new styles
with Old World looks. Country
Man features figures of plants,
birds and dogs molded into the
dark metal backs of benches and
chairs, while Gothic is a reproduc-
tion of a Victorian cast-iron seat
