For most Americans, the
weeks between Memorial Day
and Labor Day provide
increased opportunities for
recreation and relaxation.
Whether you're heading for the
hills or to the beach for a soli-
tary retreat or a boisterous fam-
ily vacation, the summer
months are likely to find you
on the road again.
If you'll be traveling by car,
advance planning and preven-
tive maintenance can help
ensure that summer driving
will be trouble-free. From
replacing worn windshield
wipers to filling the windshield
washer reservoir, simple main-
tenance can make for more
comfortable, safer driving.

Checking engine coolant
and oil levels is
particularly important in
the heat of the
summer, as is making
sure that your car is
equipped with a
charged battery.

as is making sure that your car
is equipped with a battery that
will function despite potentially
blistering temperatures.
In order to ensure that your
car's charging system is work-
ing at maximum efficiency, fol-
low the following advice from
the Sears Auto Centers:
• Make periodic checks of
the battery water level.
• Make a visual inspection to
detect defective cables, corro-
sion, loose connectors, hold-
downs, terminals or belts that
need attention or replacement.
• Clean dirt from battery top
with a cloth dipped in ammonia
or in a solution of baking soda
dissolved in water.
• Have your car's starting
and charging system checked
is you notice unusual "Flareup"
in your headlights when speed-
ing up, or if engine cranking
speed seems to be slower than
normal.
By equipping your car with a
battery that is designed for
high-heat climates, and by
investing in preventive mainte-
nance, you can hit the summer-
time travel trails feeling confi-
dent that your vehicle has been
adequately prepared for warm-
weather driving. 0
