a drive and pushed to get
me one.
"It wasn't clear if it was
going to be a clarinet or
flute. It was a matter of
luck that it ended up
being a flute. If it had
been a clarinet first, I
would have wound up
playing a clarinet."
After formal studies in
Israel and England, Mr.
Ben-Meir, at age 21, won
the silver medal at the
International Wind
Competition in Helsinki.
He became principal
flutist of the Gadna Youth
and Haifa symphonies and
was invited to the United
States as visiting profes-
sor at Ithaca College in
1965. Later he was asked
to serve as artist-in-resi-
dence at the University of
Buffalo.
His work with the DSO
started in 1967, many
years before he organized
the Michigan Flute
Orchestra, which has
about 25 members.
"There is plenty of
material written for flute
orchestras," said Mr. Ben-
Meir, whose group recent-
ly entertained the Music
Study Club and residents
of the Jewish Federation
Apartments.
Members are recom-
mended by teachers or
audition after learning
about the ensemble.
Mr. Ben-Meir becomes
acquainted with flutists in
other states as they use
services provided by Flute
World in Farmington
Hills.
"It's a dream I had," he
said about his business,
which he started about 10
years ago. "Besides play-
ing the flute, I liked know-
ing how it's made and
adjusted. Little by little, I
started thinking it would
be nice to have a shop that
catered to flute players.
"We stocked things that
people really need quickly
but had to wait two or
three weeks to get. The
word went out to flutists
and teachers nationwide
so we could serve them.
We have professors from
all over the world call us
for advice."
Aside from the serious
items, which also are
included in a Flute World
mail-order catalogue, the
business offers jewelry,
posters and even ties hav-
ing to do with the instru-
ment.
Mr. Ben-Meir's wife,
Liz, manages the store,
which has small studios
for lessons.

The Ben-Meirs have
three children, and two
play instruments for fun.
Amy, 23, follows the flute
tradition, while Michael,
14, likes the clarinet.
Daniel, 16, is tuned in to
other interests.
After a trip to Israel
this summer to visit fami-
ly, Mr. Ben-Meir is head-
ing to northern Michigan
— with his flute, of <
course. He will be teach-
ing a master class at
Interlochen.
Michigan Flute Festival
'93 starts at 3:30 p.m.
Sunday, May 23, at
Orchestra Hall. For infor-
mation, call 833-3700. 111
