he home of Norm and
Sue Pappas was the
recent site for a
discussion on the
Israel Arts and Science
Academy, the only residen-
tial high school in Israel for
gifted and talented students.
Dr. Michael Reiner, senior
director resource developer,
and Fred Greenberg, ex-
ecutive director, spoke about
the unique school.
Located in Jerusalem, it
was opened in 1990. The
school uses an inter-
disciplinary approach to
learning, integrating the
arts and sciences. The school
represents the entire social
strata of Israel —religious
and secular Jews, Israelis
and Arabs, kibbutzim and
moshavim. The. students
take an entrance exam and
must be motivated as well as
intelligent and creative.

"The goal of the Academy
is to graduate well-educated,
deeply committed adults
who are independent
learners and involved in
their communities," said Dr.
Reiner. He also believes the
school can become a world
center in how to teach the
gifted. He said six foreign
ministers of education have
visited the school.
The Academy has already
found some Detroit support.
Max Fisher and Ed and
Julie Levy are among the
founders. Howard and
Jean Dubin, Carol and
Gene Zamler, Larry
Jackier, Doreen
Hermelin, Ron Klein,

Steve Victor, Steve Grand
and Eleanor Folbe at-
tended the discussion.

make-up these days. "I have
the 12-step approach, and it
takes me about 20 minutes
to apply," she confessed. Ms.
Field uses this skill every
Friday in order to appear on
the Channel 7 noon news.
