Janis came home from the Mission a different Jew. We were going to make aliyah within two weeks, and move in with our new Moroccan friends and their 11 children in our sister city of Yavne. The house also returned to normalcy. Amichai finally took a bath. Rachel went to school again (her hair still hasn't grown back); the re- cession returned to Sara's; I got to read the newspaper in the evenings and the house is once again a mess. What makes the role of the Jewish journalist particularly delicate, though, is that at times we see ourselves as deeply in- volved advocates and partners in the enterprise of building Jewish community, but at times we step back and try to be objective observers, and at other times we are outright crit- ics. For all the protestations among the journalists that they were just doing their job,on the ADL case, for example, one was left with the pain in Abe Fox- man's voice as he explained why he hoped that Jewish jour- nalists would act with their hearts as well as their heads. There is no wall separating the press from the community in the Jewish world. It's more like a revolving door, since many Jewish newspapers in this country are owned or heav- ily subsidized by their local fed- erations. Even the independents are dependent on remaining in good favor with the communal powers that be. The newspapers are desper- atefor respect and credibility; the organizations are insistent <, on presenting a positive, unit- ed front. Not surprisingly, the com- munity doesn't know how to peg us, or what to expect of us. "Sometimes we want you to be the New York Times," ac- knowledged one Jewish execu- tive, "and sometimes we want you to be the synagogue bul- letin." This confusion of roles often leads to mistrust on both /' sides. In the end, it comes down to respect, trust and the strength of personal relationships that can withstand occasional dif- ferences. I think you can build a com- munity by reporting its short- comings — if you also report its successes, and do it all with fair- ness and a measure of empa- thy. Its a tall order, but one worth striving for in the ongoing quest to create a credible Jewish newspaper as well as a credible Jewish community.
