view, Mr. Silajdzic said that
while most Americans still
don't understand the carnage
in Bosnia, the Jewish com-
munity has shown excep-
tional sensitivity to his
nation's travails.
"It's hard for people to
imagine what's happening to
us," he said. "Pedple just take
it as something horrible hap-
pening to people far away,
somewhere. But this is hap-
pening to real people. And
those who have been through
this, whose families have
been through it, understand
that this is a reality happen-
ing to real people, now."

Orthodox Lobby
On Health Reform

2

Jewish groups are watching
closely as Hillary Rodham
Clinton's task force inches
closer to releasing its health
care reform package.
In a letter to Ms. Clinton,
Agudath Israel of America
urged the task force not to
forget the health care sys-
tem's moral and religious
component.
Abba Cohen, the group's
Washington representative,
said his group wanted to
bring two additional concerns
to Ms. Clinton's attention:
• "Health care rationing,"
the idea that it may be more
important to provide broad
care to larger numbers of peo-
ple than expensive, in-depth
treatment to relatively few.
"When you do that," said
Mr. Cohen, "you get into a
very complex cost-benefit
analysis about the value of
life."
Jewish law places a high
value on the preservation of
life, the group told the First
Lady. Any change in health
care policy that would ration
care must take that into ac-
count.
• Sensitivity to Orthodox
families. Since Orthodox
"tend to have large families,"
Mr. Cohen said, any health
care reform from the admin-
istration should "be sympa-
thetic to the needs of
pregnant women and families
with many children." ❑

Inspired by the tallit, Zionist
leader David Wolfsohn or-
dered a flag made with two
blue stripes and a Star of
David on a white
background. The flag was
first displayed in 1897, at
the First Zionist Congress,
held in Basle, Switzerland.
Contrary to Arab propagan-
da, the two blue stripes on
the flag do not represent
Israeli "expansionism" to
the Nile and Euphrates
rivers.
