The reason the Pales- tinians reduced their dele- gation and finally boy- cotted the meeting con- vened by U.S. officials, according to the paper, was that the Saudis had failed to come through with the promised cash. If the Palestinians have the potential to open the door to a settlement, Damascus has the power to keep it shut, and Syria's canny President Hafez Assad is continuing to keep all his options open. He remains tantalizing- ly coy about what he really means by "full peace," con- tinues to maintain close a military alliance with radi- cal Iran, continues to spon- sor the 10 religious and nationalist Palestinian fac- tions that oppose a deal with Israel and he contin- ues to allow Lebanon's Hezbollah fighters to attack Israel's northern border. According to a senior Israeli political source, Mr. Assad understands that he must replace his former Soviet patron and is ready to negotiate a deal with Israel. At the same time, however, he is determined to "keep his options open." In that case, the most ominous phenomenon is that his military produc- tion plants are still work- ing at full stretch — pro- ducing sophisticated medi- um-range missiles and chemical warheads that could be Syria's response if the peace process fails. 0 Settlers, Shas Ch Clash On Policy for a CHANCE TO WIN IN OUR $25,000 GIVEAWAY! 1 2 gni-shin y _S:(Woociw-ciwi, c oat Oak Uudt JVatifi of 696) 3/3- 48-P5/5 GRAND PRIZE FIRST PRIZE SECOND PRIZE THIRD PRIZE MS Muck Regal Limited Sedan into Round-Hp MI-Ouiice Bar U.S. Mint (worth over $20,0001) American Airlines Tickets of Silver Bullion! Maple., Suite 201 West Bloomfield, Michigan • • • 737-3390 By Appointment Jerusalem (JTA) — Right- wing settlers clashed over the weekend with fervently Orthodox supporters of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the spiritual leader of the Shas party, over the influential rabbi's backing of the Labor- led government's peace poli- cies. Settlers demonstrating outside of Rabbi Yosef's home, protesting Shas' par- ticipation as a partner of the ruling coalition, were assaulted by hundreds of Rabbi Yosef's adherents. Two settlers suffered serious wounds. Ironically, the clash came as Shas was in the midst of a political crisis with Labor and threatened to pull out of the coalition, though over issues unrelated to the peace process. The settlers, led by Rabbi Menahem Felix, have been staging a sit-in strike for the past four weeks, in protest of the ongoing alliance bet- ween Shas and the Labor Party. Rabbi Yosef supporters regarded the demonstiation as an unacceptable att.-m-Ipt to drag their rabbi into poli- tics, and a personal harass- ment of their leader. The weekend clash follow- ed an outburst by Rabbi Yosef in front of his followers during the weekly Torah lesson. The rabbi re- portedly burst into tears, complaining that the dem- onstrating settlers were making life miserable for his family and would not leave him in peace. Supporters of Rabbi Yosef showed up at his house, in Jerusalem's prestigious Talbiyeh neighborhood, and physically attacked the demonstrators. Rabbi Felix and another settler were injured in the face and rushed to the hospital. Rabbi Yosef's followers then threw fur- niture into the street and set it afire. The settlers filed com- plaints with the police against the attackers, as well as against Rabbi Yosef himself. In response, dozens of set- tlers showed up at Rabbi Yosers residence the next morning, in a gesture of solidarity with the sit-in strikers, led by Rabbi Felix, who had returned from the hospital. (
