WARREN UTICA Fashion With Value Always! db rnold Shay, a survivor of four concentration camps, attended Yom Hazikaron commemo- rations last week. He want- ed to remember his cousin, Shraga, who lived through World War II but died fight- ing for the State of Israel. Mr. Shay was among nearly 750 Detroit Jews who congregated at the Maple- Drake Jewish Community Center for Yom Hazikaron programs sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and the Israel Desk. Yom Hazikaron pays tribute to men and women who fought and died for their country. Mr. Shay, who lives in Farmington Hills, last saw Shraga in 1938, when the two men were living in Europe. World War II sepa- rated them until a month ago, when Arnold visited the Latrun Armored Corps Memorial while traveling with the Michigan Miracle Mission to Israel. There, he saw Shraga's name listed with the names of other dead soldiers. "You get a little shook up, but I am used to seeing names on tombstones," Mr. Shay said. "I feel that if we had Israel in those days - the 1930s - we wouldn't have lost 6 million Jews." In Israel, Yom Hazikaron is held every April. A siren blasts for a minute and all Israelis stop what they're doing. They remember indi- viduals who enabled citizens today to celebrate Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel Independence Day. Yom Hazikaron precedes Independence Day. "The feeling in Israel is that if it hadn't been for those who helped create and defend the Israeli state, we would not be able to cele- brate its independence," said Dennis Bernard, co- chairman of the Yom Hazikaron event here. Members of the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization read short biographies of some fallen soldiers, like Yoram Mintzber. In 1973, the Israeli sports enthusiast died fighting in the Yom Kippur War when he was 23 years old. Shira Drissman, repre- senting Wayne State University Hillel, distrib- uted flyers protesting the seven-year imprisonment of Ron Arad, an Israeli air force navigator. Mr. Arad was captured when his jet blew up over Lebanon. "Arad is now held by Iranian fundamentalists in an unknown location," reads the. flyer. "The Iranians have never officially admit- ted that they are holding him or know his where- abouts." During the formal Yom Hazikaron ceremony, people of all ages packed Shiffman Hall at the JCC. Many had to stand up because all seats were taken. In the back of the auditorium, Israeli war veterans stood with blue- and-white flags. Gad Ya'acobi, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, gave the keynote address. He called for peace, "the key to economic and human development." This was the first Yom Hazikaron Mr. Ya'acobi has marked outside the State of Israel. "I feel very different here," he told the crowd. "But I'm very encouraged by your identification with Israel, its history, its sacri- fice, its people." After the speeches, the crowd gathered outside the JCC at the site of what will be a permanent memorial to Israel's fallen soldiers. Detroit is the first Diaspora community to plan such a memorial. ❑ Young Family Service Set The Young Family Shabbat Committee of Temple Emanu- El will hold its final Shabbat service of the school year 10:15 a.m. May 22.
