Dr. Henry Norton Bershas,
8, of Farmington Hills, died
ay 12. Professor emeritus at

1981. A graduate of Wayne

in 1938, he received his
Master's in 1946 after having
served as a master sergeant
in the Signal Corps during
World War II. Dr. Bershas was
ast president of the
American Association of
University Professors, past
president of Phi Beta Kappa
at Wayne State University, a
university board council
member, a board member of
the Press Board at Wayne
State University and a
ublished author.
He leaves his wife, Rosaline;
son and daughter-in-law, Dr.

loomfield; daughter, Joan of
England; sister and brother-
in-law, Ruth and Harry

Arthur Belfer

New York (JTA) — Arthur
Belfer, 86, an industrialist
and philanthropist, died May
2.
Mr. Belfer made a fortune
in the petroleum business
and gave a fortune away,
largely to Jewish institutions.
In 1953, Belfer founded
Belco Petroleum Corp., which
dealt in offshore drilling and
the exploration and develop-
ment of oil and gas in the
United States and Peru.
The firm grew to be one of
the Fortune 500's largest in-
dustrial companies in the
United States. It was listed on
the New York Stock Ex-
change in 1963.
In 1983, the firm merged
with what is now Enron
Corp., a Houston-based gas
pipeline production company.
Belfer was a director and ma-
jor shareholder of Enron un-
til his death.
Mr. Belfer endowed the R.A.
Rees Pritchett Chair in
Microbiology at Cornell
University; the Arthur Belfer
Chair at Syracuse University;
a geriatric center at New
York University; and a chair
at Tel Aviv University..
In Israel, Mr. Belfer
founded the Belfer Center for
Energy Research.
Mr. Belfer held leadership
positions in the Appeal of
Conscience Foundation; State
of Israel Bonds; Yad Vashem
Holocaust Memorial; Ameri-
an Jewish Committee; Anti-
Defamation League; Jewish
Theological Seminary; and
United Jewish Appeal-
Federation of Jewish Philan-
thropies of New York.

Dr. S.A. Katz

Dr. Stuart A. Katz, 53, of West
Bloomfield, died May 14. Dr.
Katz graduated from U-M
Medical School and took his
internship at Detroit Receiv-
ing Hospital. He was in
private practice in orthopedic
surgery in the Detroit area
from 1971 until his death. For
more than 20 years he was
with the Woodland Medical
Group, Detroit, Novi and
Southfield. For the past 1 1/2
years he was with the medical
group of Bardenstein, Green,
Schechter, Krugel and Katz.
He was on the staff of Sinai,
Children's, Harper, Northwest
Grace and Mt. Carmel
hospitals.
He is survived by his wife,
Lenore; daughters, Cheryl of
Wixom, Debra of Kalamazoo,
Julie of West Bloomfield;
brother and sister-in-law,
Howard and Jenna of San
Diego.
