on Cristina, his wife, and
she was wonderful.
"Cristina reminded me
very much of Sophia
Loren because she is
Italian. She told me right
away to call her `Cristina.'
We published her picture
on the cover of Life a few
months before Life folded
in 1978."
Mr. Eisenstaedt, who
has taken few family pho-
tos except for those of his
late wife, believes he puts
portrait subjects at ease
by talking to them while
he operates the camera,
working alone and using
very little equipment.
In contrast, he is very
uncomfortable when oth-
ers photograph him.
"When I have an exhibi-
tion, sometimes 20 pho-
tographers take my pic-
ture at the same time, but
I don't like to be pho-
tographed because I'm
always coming out very
ugly," he teased. "I like to

be behind the camera, not
in front of the camera."
Mr. Eisenstaedt has
developed many books
about both his subjects
and approach but makes a
point of shutting out his
career each time he enters
his apartment. The man
who has photographed the
great musical artists of
the century, including
Rachmaninoff and
Chaliapin, turns to their
talents for his personal
enjoyment.
"You won't believe it if
you come to my home —
no photographs, not one
picture in there," he said.
"That's because I'm sur-
rounded by pictures all
the time in my office and
at my exhibitions.
"In my apartment, I like
to listen to music, mostly
by Russian composers and
I like only classical music.
I listen always in the
morning between 7 and 8.
I'm an early bird."
The Eisenstaedt exhibi-
tion will be at the Circle
Gallery May 19-June 13.
The gallery is open 10 a.m.
- 9 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.
- 6 p.m. Saturdays and
noon - 5 p.m. Sundays.
