GRADUATION TIME!

Plan The Perfect Party

I

10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the
Italian restaurant in Sugar
Tree Shopping Center on Or-
chard Lake Road with live
jazz, appetizers and cocktail
specialties including a vodka
bar . . . Ed Janos will open his
Avenue Diner soon on Wood-
ward in Royal Oak .. .
Greek Islands Coney Island
will be the second restaurant
in Applegate Square on Nor-
thwestern Highway at the
end of summer. It'll join Le
Metro in feeding folks . . . If
Kernel Sherrod, new ex-
ecutive chef at Clarion Hotel
and its Tivoli Restaurant, is
anything like his back-
ground, the 12 Mile and Or-
chard Lake Road hotel has a
winner . . . Former Norm's
Diner on 12 Mile east of Or-
chard Lake Road will become
a seafood operation owned by
Norm LePage.
RUSH FOR FALAFEL,
self-designated national food
of Israel, is on among
Mideastern restaurants here
since Michigan Miracle Mis-
sion returned recently from
its Israel trip . . . Places like
La Fendi, Sultan's Sahara,
Waleed's, Pyramids, etc., are
laying claim that theirs is
better.
Correct names of the
gracious hostess and host dur-
ing our visit for dinner at
their apartment in Yavne,
Israel, are Zipora and Shalom
Ben-David . . . It was one of
the best meals that we had
while in Israel.
Amazing is more the word
for it . . . How 1,284 members
of the Michigan Miracle Mis-
sion could be given such
precision-like coordination is
mind boggling . . . Seems like
even the littlest details were
thought of in this unbeliev-
able undertaking . . . Pur-
poses were greatly achieved
for which all Jewish people,
including those who couldn't
make the trip, should be
highly grateful . . . Marvin
Yagoda said it for many when
he muttered, "Darned, why
didn't I go, too!"
Tip to local bookstores and
libraries . . . Stock up on
reading material about Israel
. . . The thirst for more
knowledge of this great little
country is on because of
Jewish Federation's Michigan
Miracle Mission . . . which
was accomplished in a mighty
powerful, highly-organized
10-day visit . . . Israel is a
stunning portrayal of ex-
uberant pride that comes
from every nook and corner
and is the shining light of a
rightfully proud feelng of a
being a Jew.
REUNION FOR group
called the Titans years back
was at a northwest restaurant
recently . . . with attendance

by Milton Collins, Izzie Eps-
tein, Iry Farber, George Fried-
man, Sidney "Shy" Kaluzny,
Sy Kaplan, Alex Lipson, Ben
Pollack, Paul Schultz, Her-
man Shapiro and Al Wagen-
heim . . . Nate Bassen, Wally
Drake and Morris Rose were
unable to attend . . . The
fellows all grew up in the
Detroit area and have been
meeting as friends for over 60
years.
MAIL DEPT . . . from
Marian Kantor . . . "Regard-
ing your wondering about
calculators on shopping carts
in your April 30 column, they
are already at the Publix
store near my Florida home
in Venice."
From Donna Bassin of
Shure Travel Service in En-
cino, Calif . . "Thank you for
the column about growing up
in Detroit during the '40s.
How we identified! Wasn't
that the best? We didn't have
a lot of money but we had a
multitude of friends and
activities.
"Leonard and I have been
in California for the past 14
years and when we get
together with other former
Detroiters, how we reminisce.
In fact, your column was
passed around for required
reading at our dinner club
last weekend.
"I have settled, happily, in-
to planning road trips for our
clients in the entertainment
industry (travel agent to the
stars like the Smothers
Brothers, Dom DeLuise, Rich
Little, etc? Leonard is fiscal
director for a chain of drug
abuse hospitals.
"Thanks again for the
memories."
THE SIGN IS already up
. . . and opening soon at the
former site of Ramone's in
Sunset Strip, on North-
western between 12 Mile and
Inkster, will be Bangkok
Hung Cafe . . . Seating for 37
will be at seven booths, five
tables and a counter, with
dining on authentic Thai food
. . . Owner Neg Hang also has
Szechuan Gardens in Troy
and Clinton Township.

UNIQUE KOSHER Carry
Out & Catering is the former
Sperber's Kosher Carry Out
owned by Rita Jerome . . . It
is still located on Greenfield
north of 10 Mile in Oak Park
. . . Dr. Donald and Norma
Golden look like the years are
going backward instead of for-
ward . . . Mollie Abraham,
Detroit Free Press restaurant
reviewer, is why many
restaurants are still in
business . . . yet so few give
her due credit for this . . .
Smart restaurateurs correct
their mistakes because of
Mollie. ❑
