Chiropractic Health Hints
WITH DR. STANLEY LEVINE, D.C.
YOUR SPINE AND SHOULDER ARM PAIN!
Shoulder and arm pain with varying degrees of immobility... constitute
the most frequently recognized symptoms of structural defects in the
lower neck and upper spine.
Should a spinal segment in the lower neck be forced from its normal
alignment or beyond its normal range of movement by a fall, accident or
by postuTal stress, the segment may partially close the tiny nerve open-
ings between adjacent segments. The nerves that pass through these tiny
openings supply the shoulder, neck , arm, upper back and chest muscles.
Frequently the condition begins as stiff and tender muscles across the
DR. LEVINE
top of the shoulders. Over a period of weeks, the condition progresses to
a burning ache and may extend into the neck and head. Neck and shoulder movement
becomes increasingly painful and difficult. Attempts to shave or comb your hair may cause
sharp pain down the arm and tingling in the fingers. Weakness and fatigue tremor of the arm
may accompany the pain. The muscles across the chest may become tender. The symptoms
are made more severe by coughing or sneezing.
Experience has shown that acute and chronic shoulder and arm pain syndromes respond
extremely well to the specialized care offered by the chiropractic profession.

New York (JTA) — The
American Red Cross has
launched a campaign to help
its Israeli counterpart join
the international commun-
ity of relief agencies.
Each of the Red Cross's
2,700 field units has been
sent an information kit
detailing the emergency
medical agency's support for
Magen David Adom's ad-
mission to the International
Federation of Red Cross and
Red Crescent Societies.
The Magen David Adorn,
founded in Tel Aviv in 1930,
-is Israel's national emergen-
cy medical, ambulance and
disaster service, and has
never been formally ac-
cepted as a member of the
international group.
The Red Cross kit presents
a history of the American
organization's efforts to in-
clude the Magen David
Adorn in the worldwide
league and suggests action
that its chapters can take to
help.
Elizabeth Dole, president
of the American Red Cross,
said in a statement that "the
American Red Cross has for
many years worked with
Magen David Adorn to help
it to achieve full partnership
with the rest of the Red
Cross movement."
As part of its effort to
assist in the international
recognition of Magen David
Adorn, the American Red
Cross is also organizing an
international symposium on
blood transfusion medicine
to take place in November
1995 at the MDA National
Blood Service Center in
Ramat Gan, Israel.
Ann Stingle, a spokesper-
son for the organization, ex-
plained that the symbol of
the red cross, an inversion of
the Swiss flag, was initiated
as a nonreligious marker in
1863 to honor the country
that aided the movement's
birth.
In 1874, the Ottoman Em-
pire refused to use the cross
as a protective emblem be-
cause of its association with
the Crusades, and by 1929
several countries asked to
use other emblems.
In a vote that year the
international organization
limited the permissible
emblems to three: the cross,
the crescent and the Iranian
Lion and Sun, no longer in
use.
The Star of David was pre-
sented as a candidate for of-
ficial emblem in 1949 at the
Geneva Convention but
voted down, thus preventing
Magen David Adom's official
inclusion in the interna-
tional organization.
The American Red Cross
has recognized Magen David
Adorn as a national human-
itarian society since 1948,
but it deepened its support
with an October 1989 resolu-
tion proclaiming that
"admission of the MDA is
right and just and in fur-
therance of the fundamental
principle of universality."
Included in the kit sent to
American Red Cross
chapters are suggestions for
the establishment of
exchange programs and
pairings with the Israeli
service.
The kit also urges clear re-
sponse to public inquiries
about this "difficult and
challenging issue" and the
selection of a chapter leader
to serve as regular
spokesperson on the issue.
The American Red Cross
had previously issued a simi-
lar kit in the early 1980s.
