* "MISS SAIGON"

Shalom is an English speak-
ing congregation.
On the day of the dedica-
tion, March 2, 1990, "there
was such electricity in the
air," says Ms. Topp. Many had
seen the property when it was
in deteriorating condition.
"Everyone came in and just
gasped!"
Since then, there have been
bar and bat mitzvahs in the
sanctuary, several conversion
ceremonies, a wedding and
other events, too.
For example, last July 31,
the date of the expulsion of
Jews from Spain 500 years
ago, member Harry Ezratty
wrote and conducted a special
service complete with hymns
in Ladino. At the same time,
a special exhibit on the Jews
of the Caribbean was on
display in the social hall for
a month.
Cultural events and ac-
tivities are an important part
of this congregation. There's
the extensive book display
during Jewish Book Week in
December, a Jewish arts and
crafts festival and guest
speakers throughout the year.
Rabbi Ronald Sobol, senior
rabbi at the prestigious Tem-
ple Emanu-El on Fifth
Avenue in Manhattan, was a
recent scholar in residence,
and so was Walter Zanger, an
Israeli who is a Reform rabbi
and guide in Israel.
Another recent visiting
scholar was Dr. Jonas Sarna,
an eminent biblical scholar
from Boston, who came for
four nights after the chair-
woman of education, Sue
Klau, called and invited him.
"We don't have unlimited
funds but we do have a lot of
chutzpah" says Ms. rIbpp. "We
just invite people to come. We
wine them and dine them; we
put them up in our homes,
and they get to know us."
"Yes, there's sometimes a
feeling of being isolated on an
island," she says. "But the
other side of the coin is that
it's a motivation to do more,
to be creative."
She also points out that in
this environment, con-
gregants are motivated to
become a much more tightly-
knit group than they might
become if they lived in a large
city in the continental United
States.
"There's a real feeling of
family — of being part of a
loving family," says Ms. Topp.
"In a community that's
isolated geographically, that's
an important factor because
many of our members don't
have family here.
"But we are family for each
other. We're a family by
choice. And it's a special and
wonderful family." ❑
