New York (JTA) — The
American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee has
signed a new contract with
the Polish government
governing the Jewish
group's activities there.
The contract, signed last
month, replaces one signed
on Dec. 13, 1981, the day
that martial law was
declared in Poland.
The JDC, which is funded
by the United Jewish Ap-
peal, has budgeted $930,000
to aid the Jews of Poland
this year. JDC officials said
the new contract reflects the
dramatic changes in post-
Communist Poland.
In contrast to the previous
agreement, which left con-
trol of all activities in
government hands, the new
accord allows the JDC
unlimited operations in the
fields of welfare, culture, ed-
ucation and religion; grants
the JDC offices in Warsaw
and Krakow; and provides a
tax exemption.
The contract was signed by
Marek Pernal, director of re-
ligious affairs in the Polish
Prime Minister's Office,
Deputy Minister Jerzy
Stachanczyk, and the presi-
dent of the JDC, Ambas-
sador Milton Wolf.
Mr. Wolf said that while it
had been thought that only
4,000 elderly Jews remained
in Poland, the JDC now
knows of between 5,000 and
10,000.
