that pitted him against his
critics.
Mr. Brodsky states that
state-sponsored anti-Semi-
tism has been replaced with
a "`black-market anti-Semi-
tism' ... [that] draws upon
age-old Russian xenophobia
and the traditional stock-in-
trade of pre-Soviet anti-Se-
mitic obsessions."
He also says that recent
emigration trends reflect
Russian Jews' fears. From
1989 to 1992, he notes, the
number of Russian Jews leav-
ing the Russian Federation
comprised only 27 percent of
the total from the ex-USSR.
In 1992, that figure rose to 40
percent.
"If hard economic condi-
tions were the main factor at
work," he says, "one would ex-
pect emigration from
Ukraine, where the economy
is worse than in Russia, to in-
crease, as well. But... Ukrain-
ian Jewish emigration has
remained relatively constant
despite the worsening econ-
omy there. The difference be-
tween the two countries is
that in Ukraine today there
is practically no public anti-
Semitism, either in the media
or in political rhetoric."

The most sweeping anti-
Jewish regulation in Ameri-
can history went into effect
on December 11, 1862, when
Gen. Ulysses Grant issued
the notorious Order No. 11
expelling all Jews "as a
class" from Tennessee. Pres-
ident Lincoln was quick to
rescind the order on January
7, 1863.

) 'Messiah'
Standoff in Spy

The always disrespectful Spy
magazine announces that the
"battle of the messiahs" has
narrowed down to two con-
tenders: Sun Myung Moon,
head of the Unification
Church, and Rabbi Men-
achem Schneerson, the rebbe
of the Lubavitch Chasidim.
In a pseudo-genealogical
chart, Spy lists 16 "messiahs:"
eight in the "American
League," eight in the "Inter-
national League." Battling
against the rebbe were such
unsavory characters as
Charles Manson and the late
David Koresh. Among those
pitted against the Rev. Moon
was the late Jesus of Naza-
reth. The reverend won.
One can assume that few
— if any — Lubavitchers or
Moonies subscribe to Spy and
the chart won't cost the for-
merly witty humor magazine
a single subscriber.
