Reports from Washington
midweek reflected continued
buoyancy over the at-
mosphere and substance of
the Israeli- Palestinian
negotiations, but a sense of
disappointment with the
Syrian talks.
These reports said the
Syrians had apparently ex-
pected a positive Israeli at-
titude to the "everything-
for-everything" formula, ar-
ticulated last month by
Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak, in reference to
land-for-peace on the Golan.
Instead, Israeli Ambas-
sador Itamar Rabinovich,
chief of the negotiations
with Syria, still holds that
Damascus has been unclear
about the nature of the pro-
posed peace it would accept.
Israel would insist on such
elements as full normaliza-
tion of relations, exchange of
ambassadors and borders
open to trade and people.
Syria has so far not com-
mitted explicitly to such
specifics.
In the meantime, Mr.
Rabinovich and Mr. Rabin
have carefully avoided mak-
ing even a hypothetical
Israeli commitment to total
withdrawal from the Golan.

Neo-Nazi Trove
Is Uncovered

Police in the
Rome (JTA)
northern Italian city of
Brescia raided the homes of
three militant soccer fans
this weekend and discovered
a veritable treasure-trove of
weapons and neo-Nazi pro-
paganda.
The three fans — a 26-
year-old ironworker, a 25-
year-old carpenter and a 22-
year-old student — "had
practically transformed
their homes into temples of
Nazism," the daily Corriere
della Sera reported.
The police carried out the
raids on the youths, known
to be active in skinhead and
militant soccer circles,
before a hotly contested
soccer match between two
local teams.
Security measures for the
game were stepped up and
the management of both
teams appealed to fans to
maintain order.
Among the material
discovered were banners,
flags, pins and badges bear-
ing the swastika and other
Nazi insignia, propaganda
material, knives, bullets,
and a crowbar.
