Joseph A. Bank; a men's
and women's clothing store
in Birmingham, has eased
the garment blues for
many refugees by donating
nearly 150 suits to the
Resettlement Warehouse.
The company featured its
semi-annual sale in April.
As a promotion, it adver-
tised that customers who
donated their old suits
would receive $50 off a new
suit they purchased at the
store.
"It's one of the best sales
we do," said men's clothing
manager Judith Sandhu.
The suits are given to
local charities.
When Ellie Slovis with
Jewish Experiences For
Families heard about the
sale from her daughter,
Debbie, she called the store

and -asked manager Jim
Soucek to donate some of
the second-hand spiffies.
Mr. Soucek agreed, and
volunteers carted carloads
of clothing to Northland
Mall, location of the
Warehouse.
Alec Kessler, one of three
Warehouse managers, said
the first batch of suits to
reach the Warehouse was
readily taken home by
Russians embarking on the
job search.
"Most of the suits were
still in their dry-cleaning
bags. Good suits," he said.
He observed, however,
that most of the clothing
ranged between size 38 and
42. There were few larger
sizes.
Mrs. Slovis said she
hopes individuals in the
Jewish community will
donate their old, but
unshredded, threads to the
Warehouse.
"We were delighted to
get these suits, but we
know they won't last forev-
er," she said. "It would be
very exciting if people
would remember the needs
of new Americans when
their good clothes are no
longer needed."
