The Newmans Israel Bonds Honors Newmans Sharon and Charles Newman will be the honorees at the Greater Ann Arbor State of Israel Bonds dinner 6 p.m. May 23 at the Radisson on the Lake, 1275 South Huron Street in Ypsilanti. The New- mans will receive the Israel Unity Award for their efforts on behalf of Israel and the Jewish community. Last year's honorees — Drs. Geral- dine and Sheldon Markel — will serve as dinner chairs. Sharon is involved in both Jewish and civic affairs. She, along with Charles, are founders of thg Jewish Com- munity Center of Washtenaw County — where she has serv- ed on the board and as treasurer. She is a past board member of the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) and has par- ticipated as a volunteer in the Israel Defense Forces through the Volunteers for Israel Pro- gram. Sharon is the assisant chair for administration of the UJA's campaign cabinet. She also runs the Maccabi program at the Jewish Com- munity Center and is a member of ORT and Hadassah. Charles is the president of ReCellular, Inc. and Demand Publishing, Inc. and is a prin- cipal in the Newman Group. Active in community affairs as well, Charles is a member of the executive committee of the International Hillel Com- mission; a board member of the UJA Federation and coor- dinator of the Ann Arbor President's Club. His past ser- vice includes president and vice president of finance of the Jewish Community Cen- ter; board member of the Hillel Foundation at the University of Michigan; founder of the Celebration of Jewish Arts; treasurer of the Jewish Community Council and the United Jewish Appeal. The weekend will feature a Friday evening sermon and Saturday morning keynote address by Rabbi Kerry Olit- zky, director of the School of Education and of the Gradu- ate Studies Program at He- brew Union College — Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City. Rabbi Olitzky's address will be followed by workshops about caring for ourselves and for others including children, adolescents and the elderly. The facilitators will be clergy members, social workers and therapists. The program will end with Hav- dalah and a Closing Circle, and will also include a Kid- dish and lunch. Ms. Field will focus on suc- cessful strategies for travel- ing with children and offer a guide's look at unique metro Detroit sites, seasonal events, Michigan day trips, overnight vacations and out-of-the-way explorations, as well as special sites for Jewish children.
