GRADUATION TIME
Plan The Perfect Party
meal since arriving in Israel
. . . a real home-cooked
roasted chicken dinner with
all the trimmings . . . Thanks
to Yavne resident Pazit Wild
who came as our young, plea-
sant interpreter, we were able
to communicate in the very
Orthodox home where genial
hospitality knew no bounds
. . . The people of Yavne like
Zipora and Shalom and Pazit
were eager to please and cer-
tainly succeeded.
If you're looking for a good
bagel, Israel is not the place
for them . . . Joel Shapiro,
born in Israel and coming to
the United States in 1947,
says it's because of the water
. . . He maintains that at-
tempts have been made for a
good bagel in Israel but met
little success.
I didn't know about this .. .
and anticipated a couple of
luscious lox and cream cheese
sandwiches on bagels at the
sumptuous Israeli breakfast
so many people had talked
about . . . A sign in the
Jonathan Dining Room of
Jerusalem Renaissance read,
"Eat as much food as you
want but no food is allowed
out of the dining room" .. .
Plenty of plastic bags by peo-
ple who obviously pay little
attention to signs . . . Little
wonder, I thought, that there
were no bagels.
Aha! . . . There is a lesson to
be learned . . . Why not get
there before all others and
have that ever-elusive bagel
. . . And so I was down early
the next morning, but still
couldn't find any and
wondered if the bagels were
going to evade me again .. .
I happened to look under a
stack of dinner rolls and sur-
prise . . . there they were .. .
a couple hiding away . . .
Israeli cream cheese is soft,
like sour cream or yogurt .. .
Many Detroiters who didn't
know better ate a firm cheese
thinking it was the kind they
get back home.
Other than a couple of
lunch duds . . . box lunches
enroute to site visitations .. .
much of the foods in Israel
were palate pleasers . . . At
one point, Max Garber luck-
ed out when the bus took off
without him . . . He didn't
have to eat his box lunch .. .
Spaking of food, the almost
1,300 localites didn't want for
any . . . Federation saw to
that . . . and it was plentiful
. . . really something else .. .
Enough food to feed twice as
many as the three plane
loads.
Dinners were a big hit .. .
like at Gamliel Yemenite
Mid-Eastern Restaurant with
food star-studded by ap-
petizers, falael, hommus, etc.,
and chicken and lamb each
on separate metal skewers
plus a delicious, very
different-tasting rice made
with fried onions and lentils.
It was at the crowded
Mahane Yehudah outdoor
market that I had an ex-
cellent falafel sandwich,
Israel's adopted national dish
like our hamburger and hot
dog are so designated . . . This
was falafel at its best . . . very
tasty, firm and greaseless .. .
Falafel is a spicy mixture of
chick peas or broad beans
formed into balls or patties,
fried and served with tahini
(sesame seed sauce) . . .
Mahane Yehudah also cor-
rectly puts chopped vege-
tables in the pita pocket.
Shabbat dinner at the
Jerusalem Renaissance was
another Israeli goodie . . .
Gefilte fish, flat-shaped and
without gravy, was not like
we now it to be but had a plea-
sant flavor accompanied, of
course, with horseradish
Also chicken soup with tiny
matzah balls . . . First batch
served by the waitress were
hard but she ran out of them
and brought another supply
. . . Still small, but more like
we know them to taste, fluffy
and easy to eat . . . Roasted
chicken had a stuffing quite
different and tasty mixed
with pineapple, almonds and
mushrooms . . . Apple strudel
dessert with vanilla sauce
was a standout . . . white
wine, red wine, rose grape
juice, iced tea, hot tea or cof-
fee . . . and a fine musical pro-
gram by the Israeli Defense
Forces' chief cantor and the
IDF Rabbinical Choir.
So this is Israel? . . . Seeing
it today certainly must be one
of the hidden reasons for
MMM . . . To let people know
more about the real Israel,
not what they read in the
papers or see on television .. .
The fault of media who go
overboard in writing or talk-
ing about it is a lot like what
outsiders think about
Detroit.
The Jewish Federation and
its partners in putting on the
sensational Michigan Miracle
Mission to Israel can't fly any
of the jumbo jets but they can
give El Al Airlines a few
hints on how to feed people
. . . Enroute from Detroit in
the third of three 747s, Judy
Holtz, with hubby Al,
remarked, "I should call for a
special meal and maybe that
way I'll get a regular one .. .
For dinner, many of those who
ordered chicken didn't get any,
But in all of life there is
good and not so good . . .
When good far overshadows
the other with enormity to
spare, success is usually
assured. 111
