"Time For Spring Cleaning"

of northern Israel.
Another Detroiter, Dr.
James Bittker, opted to
take his skills to Israel
after retiring from his
Warren dental practice
two years ago. Dr.
Bittker, 67, is one of a
handful of retired den-
tists who has traveled
overseas with Dental
Volunteers for Israel.
The dental program
was launched 13 years
ago by a Holocaust sur-
vivor. Since then, over
1,000 dentists worldwide
have volunteered to treat
underprivileged children
in a Jerusalem dental
clinic.
The clinic offers free
dental, orthodontic, and
hygiene services to
Jewish, Christian and
Arab children ages 5
through 18. Many pat-
ients, including Ethiopian
and immigrants from the
former Soviet Union, are
referred by Israeli social
service agencies. Blind,
handicapped and orphan-
ed youngsters from insti-
tutional settings are also
served.
Located on Mekor
Chaim Street (meaning
source of life), the mod-
ern, well-equipped clinic
operates two shifts daily,
six days a week. Because
Israel's socialized medical
programs do not include
dental service, a social
worker screens patient
eligibility to verify finan-

alb

cial need.
In exchange for two- to
four-week volunteer com-
mitments, DVI dentists
and their families receive
a furnished apartment,
discounts for car rentals
and restaurants and com-
plimentary tickets to cul-
tural events. But the den-
tists say the emotional
gifts outweigh any ameni-
ties the program offers.
"It had a far greater
emotional impact on me
than I ever thought," said
Dr. Bittker, who made his
second trip last year. "I
felt very proud of what I
was doing. There's a cer-
tain joy you get out of
rendering service to peo-
ple who really appreciate
it. It's better than being
paid in money."
Dr. Bittker says the
program has allowed him
to see Israel from a new
perspective.
"If you're sightseeing as
a tourist in a foreign
country, you settle into a
hotel and you get on a
sightseeing bus. But
you're not part of that
community," he said.
"There's so much that you
miss. But with this pro-
gram you become a part
of that community right
away. You shop for gro-
ceries, you walk the
streets, you really see
how the people live. It's a
tremendous experience."
Dr. Bittker said he was
impressed by the diversi-
