Gallery Exhibits
Two Artists
O.K. Harris/David Klein
Gallery will display the new
work of artists Terry Adkins
and David Mann through
May 29. Mr. Adkins' sculp-
ture consists of three-
dimensional wall pieces of
polychromed wood. Mr.
Mann's paintings are ener-
getic, abstract responses to
the unconscious.
Terry Adkins' wall sculp-
tures are influenced by both
African musical instruments
and references to the histori-
cal importance of wood
throughout the centuries.
The artist manipulates the
shape as a means of expres-
sion. The colors Mr. Adkins
applies to the sculpture adds
a mystery to the final shape.
David Mann's abstract oil
paintings are thick, aggres-
sive fields of color portraying
dreams of the unconscious,
landscapes and sheer chaos.
Without a representational
image on the canvas, the
painting comes to life
through the troweled, dense
paint, and vibrant color.
O.K. Harris/David Klein
Gallery is located at 430
North Woodward, Birm-
ingham. The gallery hours
are Tuesday through Satur-
day, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., with ex-
tended hours to 8:30 p.m. on
the first Thursday of each
month.
Detroit Artist
At Xochipilli
Xochipilli Gallery will host
an exhibit of recent paintings
by John Tormey through May
29. The gallery is located at
568 N. Woodward Avenue in
Birmingham.
A resident of Detroit, John
Tormey trained and has
taught at University of Mich-
igan. Included in this exhibit
will be Mr. Tormey's most re-
cent egg tempera and oil
paintings on canvas as well as
a few hand-puppets. With
each painting, the empty can-
vas is first covered with
words. Then, paint is layered
— image over image — until
the work is complete and
most of the original words, il-
legible. The artist does not in-
tend the viewer to be able to
read the original sign-poem,
but he does use that initial
phrase to guide him as he
creates the painting.
The puppets in this exhibit
reflect John's interest in the
theater.
Xochipilli Gallery is open
from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tues-
day-Saturday.
