David Levy
Leaves Program

Paris (JTA) — Former
Israeli Foreign Minister
David Levy created a scan-
dal here when he walked out
of a speaking engagement
organized by a Jewish stu-
dent group because one of
the other guests was a
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization official.
Mr. Levy, a senior member
of Israel's hawkish Likud
party, decided to leave the
program, titled "Peace in
the Middle East" and
organized by the Union of
Jewish Students in France,
when he found out that Afif
Safieh, the PLO's represent-
ative in London, was to ap-
pear at the same meeting.
Among the other par-
ticipants were Nawaf
Massalha, a member of
Israel's dovish Labor Party,
who is deputy minister of
health, and Knesset member
Yael Dayan, also of Labor.
Mr. Levy objected to Mr.
Safieh's presence and asked
the Israeli Embassy in Paris
to intervene and press the
student union to disinvite
the PLO representative.
The scene then became
even more awkward and
complicated.
The president of the stu-
dent union, Simon Pinto,
agreed to Mr. Levy's demand
and Mr. Safieh was asked to
leave the premises.
But Ms. Dayan, an
outspoken dove who has
openly met with PLO offi-
cials, saw Mr. Safieh leaving
and asked the organizers to
allow him back to the VIP
room.
At that point, Mr. Pinto
arrived on the scene, and
once again Mr. Safieh was
asked to leave.
Ms. Dayan continued to
back Mr. Safieh, asking her
colleague Mr. Massalha if he
saw any problem to Mr.
Safieh's presence at the
meeting. The deputy min-
ister, who is Arab, answered,
"Those silly things are over
now," presumably referring
to a now- overturned law
that forbids contact between
Israelis and PLO officials.
In the end, Mr. Safieh
stayed and Mr. Levy left,
saying he preferred not to
appear at the meeting be-
cause of problems it would
create within his party.
Ms. Dayan told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency she
found it ironic that a student
organization, in a city where
25 years ago students rioted
in the streets, now appeared
to be more conservative than
the establishment.
