tiers in the wake of growing
prospects that Israel would
eventually evacuate Jewish
settlements in the Golan.
According to some reports,
settlers in the Golan are al-
ready hording arms to use to
prevent a forced withdrawal.
The reports may well be ex-
,
aggerated, but they reflect
growing uncertainty, confu-
sion and anger among the
/-' Golan settlers as a potential
withdrawal became more
likely.
The militant statements in
the Golan triggered
criticism by many in the
government, who said the
remarks were inciteful and
inappropriate.
Labor Knesset member
Haggai Merom suggested
that the country's domestic
intelligence agency, the
Shin Bet, be sent to the
Golan to "identify extremist
elements among the settlers
and press charges against
them."
Even Benjamin Netan-
yahu, chairman of the oppo-
sition Likud party, which
opposes territorial compro-
mise, condemned state-
ments endorsing illegal
action to prevent the return
of the Golan to Syria.

FBI Investigates
JD0 Beating

Washington (JTA) — The
Federal Bureau of Investiga-
tion is looking into the case
of a man who was beaten up
after protesting at the
dedication of the U.S. Holo-
caust Memorial Museum
last week.
The Jewish Defense
Organization, a self-
proclaimed "self- defense"
group that says it fights
Nazis and anti-Semites, re-
portedly claimed respon-
sibility for the attack.
The man, David Willcox,
was reportedly waving a Pa-
lestinian flag outside the
dedication ceremony for the
Holocaust museum, which
took place April 22.
"We are proceeding with a
preliminary investigation to
see if any federal laws might
be involved here," Frank
Scafidi, a spokesman for the
FBI's Washington field of-
fice, said this week.
Mr. Scafidi said that if
members of the Jewish
group, which is based in
New York, were in fact
"ordered to Washington to
engage in this," the case
could be investigated as do-
mestic terrorism.
He noted, however, that he
was not sure yet whether the
members had been ordered
to travel to Washington.
