doesn't make sense. We need
more Hillels, not fewer. We
need more trained profession-
als on campus to help students
relate Jewish values to their
course work and interests. We
need to create a separate enti-
ty to deal with college services.
If we're lucky, six months from
now the Baltimore federation
will come to these conclusions.
But the clock is ticking now.
Similarly, the national Jew-
ish organizations are holding
countless meetings to deal with

the crisis of intermarriage and
assimilation, of Jews not aban-
doning their religion out of
anger but out, of lack of interest.
The new buzzwords are "Jew-
ish identity" and "Jewish con-
tinuity," but if the federations
had the answer, they wouldn't
need so many meetings.
While the Jewish organiza-
tions are scratching their heads
about how to get young people
interested in their heritage and
faith, the student activists at
Johns Hopkins and other cam-
puses are feeling abandoned.
Won't somebody make the con-
nection? ❑

I view the memorial service
for Israel's fallen as more im-
portant than parades com-
memorating its independence.
I want this community to ac-
tively participate in the parade
but let's not forget who made it
possible.
The community memorial
service May 13 should be at-
tended not only by those of us
who actually remember a
friend or family member now
long buried but by the entire

community on an equal basis.
This service is not just for Is-
raelis living in America or par-
ents of Americans living in
Israel but for everyone dedi-
cated to the love of Israel...
Without the American afflu-
ence, Israel would not be as eco-
nomically and politically sound,
but if we really believe that Is-
rael is an extension of our com-
munity and a common heritage
binds us, then we must realize
the importance of those who
gave their lives to protect Is-
rael.

Johannesburg (JTA) — In
another sign of the changing
times here, African National
Congress leader Nelson
Mandela has agreed to be
the keynote speaker at the
South African Jewish Board
of Deputies' national con-
gress in August.
Officials of the ANC, once
regarded with deep suspi-
cion by the Jewish commun-
ity, also attended Israel In-
dependence Day receptions
here and in Cape Town this
week.
"I am pleased the ANC
decided to send a senior
representative," Israel's
ambassador to South Africa,
Alon Liel, said at a luncheon
here last week.
"We see the ANC as a con-
structive organization in
South Africa, and we are try-

ing to build friendly rela-
tions," he said.
But Mr. Liel also stressed
the need to strike a balance
with the National Party, the
Democratic Party and the
Labor Party.
Cabinet ministers and
other members of Parlia-
ment attended, including
the first Jewish Cabinet
minister in 50 years: Louis
Shill.
The ANC's closer ties with
the Jewish community were
also evidenced by Mr.
Mandela's agreement to
speak at the Board of
Deputies congress. The
board's national director,
Seymour Kopelowitz, said it
would be the first opportuni-
ty for the Jewish community
at large to hear the ANC
president.
