San Francisco District At-
torney's office to disclose all
the information it con-
fiscated. The guild has made
its request on behalf of 85
organizations whose names
appeared in the seized files.
Those groups include anti-
apartheid, Palestinian, Arab
and a number of left-wing
organizations.
Richard Hirschhaut, ex-
ecutive director of the ADL's
Central Pacific Region, said
he was disappointed that
groups such as the Asian
Law Caucus have chosen not
to give ADL the benefit of
the doubt in the ongoing in-
vestigation.
Barbara Wahl, the Wash-
ington-based attorney repre-
senting ADL, said the in-
formation found on Bullock's
computer files has "nothing
to do with the ADL or the
ADL files.
"I have no idea whether
the ADL has files on these
groups," Mr. Wahl said.
The biggest problems pos-
ed by the spying scandal are
likely to arise in the delicate
area of Jewish-Arab ties,
where relations are not
longstanding and where
whatever trust does exist is
of a limited and highly
fragile nature.
"I had a conversation with
Richard Hirschhaut where
he personally assured me
that no spying on Arab
Americans had taken
place," said Christine Totah,
vice president of the Arab
American Democratic Club,
one of the many Arab organ-
izations that appeared in
the Bullock files.
"This makes me sick to my
stomach," she said.
Even some Jewish groups,
most of them ultra-liberal or
ultra-conservative, were
found in the Bullock files.
Leaders of these Jewish
groups said they were angry
at the idea the ADL may
have spied on them, but
hardly astonished.
Among the organizations
listed in documents released
by the San Francisco district
attorney's office were
Americans for Peace Now,
New Jewish Agenda, the
Bay Area Jewish Task Force
on Central America, Inter-
national Jewish Peace
Union, Israelis Against the
Occupation, Women in
Black, the Jewish Defense
Organization and the Jewish
Defense League.
"There is no secret among
Jewish organizations that
the ADL has been monitor-
ing Jewish voices of dis-
sent," said Eliyah Arnon,
administrative coordinator
for the politically liberal
