allow, such as at Shabbat din-
ners and holiday celebrations.
Rabbi Mishulovin says a num-
ber of them "are really inter-
ested in Yiddishkeit, and-some
are even interested in becom-
ing Jewish."
Other situations call for
more scrutiny. FREE workers
must be certain that the
refugees are actually Jewish
before overseeing their wed-
ding, performing a brit or en-
rolling children in CHAIM, an
afternoon Hebrew school
specifically for Russians. They
check in a variety of ways, in-
cluding speaking with two
Jewishly observant, reliable
witnesses.
HIAS and local officials,
meanwhile, say they want the
Jewish community to under-
stand the kind of harassment
Russian gentiles married to
Jews can face.
"If you're married to a Jew,
frankly you face many of the
same fears (in the former
Soviet Union)," Ms. Stolow
says.
"We have a moral and legal
obligation (legal, because
HIAS has signed a contract
with the U.S. government to
oversee resettlement of
"Jewish families") to take care
of the refugees," Ms. Hyman
adds. 'The philosophy of HIAS
is that history has shown that
anyone connected to Judaism
(in the former Soviet Union)
faces a potentially harmful sit,
uation, as we recall what hap-
pened in Nazi Germany." 111

Tel Aviv (JTA) — One-third
of alcoholics receiving
treatment in Israel are re-
cent immigrants from the
former Soviet Union, accor-
ding to a study by the Socie-
ty for Alcoholism in Israel.
Many of these immigrants
are afraid to seek treatment
because people who ad-
mitted to alcoholism in the
former Soviet Union would
lose their job and driver's
license, said Dr. Shoshana
Weiss of the Alcoholism
Prevention Society.
Experts said that
alcoholism in the former
Soviet Union is endemic to
society and that the
government there is ap-
parently unable to cope with
the problem.
