ter memories of persecution, sev-
eral suitcases and dreams of
freedom.
More often than not, they also
are accompanied by gentiles.
The gentiles are part of what
Jewish social service agencies la-
bel a "Jewish family." And they
account for a considerable num-
ber of Russian refugees being set-
tled in the United States and
eligible for apartment subsidies,
help finding a job and English
lessons — all thanks to the fi-
nancial support of the American
Jewish community.
Last fiscal year, which began
June 1 and ended May 30,
Resettlement Service of Detroit
handled 487 cases. Of these, about
40 percent were Jewish-Jewish
