I THE REPUBLIC BANK RATE TABLE onstrated their sincerity about reaching a peace set- tlement with Israel. The Likud leader said he is not opposed in principle to Israeli confidence-building measures, but he said they should not be one-sided. "How about confidence- building measures on the part of the Palestinians toward Israel, for example, stopping the terror?" he said. "How about confidence- building measures on the part of the Syrians toward Israel, such as stopping the tremendous wave of killing from Hezbollah, which is Syrian-controlled?" Mr. Netanyahu said Israel should begin to demand and not only to offer. And it should "make it clear that a return to the '67 boundaries or anything like it is out of the question." Clinton Meets Lubavitchers Washington (JTA) — A group of eight Lubavitcher rabbis met and exchanged gifts with President Clinton at the White House last week, and the group's leader said the president was "all attentive and very gracious." The meeting was in con- junction with "Education and Sharing Day USA," a government commemoration of the birthday of the Lubavitcher rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, which was April 2. Mr. Clinton gave the dele- gation a presidential proc- lamation and a congres- sional resolution in honor of Education Day. The rabbis, in turn, presented Mr. Clin- ton with a tzedakah box, a dollar bill and a yarmulka with his name on it in Eng- lish and Hebrew. The rebbe — who is now in poor health, having suffered an apparent relapse — has a tradition of handing out dollar bills to his followers. Rabbi Abraham Shemtov, the delegation's leader, said that the symbols on the dollar bill — including the motto "In God We Trust," the pyramid, and the eagle holding arrows and an olive branch — stood for peace through strength, and pro- gress. Rabbi Shemtov said Mr. Clinton put on the yarmulka and put the dollar bill in the tzedakah box. Then the pres- ident said, "Both of these will stay with me forever." The meeting lasted 17 minutes, Rabbi Shemtov said. Rates and prices that affect your daily finances as of 5/7/93 6.0% Prime rate 2.95% Six Month T-bill $1.01.9 Gallon Unleaded Gas Avg.
