Plaque Of Honor
Has Errors

Berlin (JTA) — A plaque in
memory of the former
chairman of the Jewish
community in Berlin,
Heinrich Stahl, was unveil-
ed here this week, but the
ceremony was overshadowed
- by two embarrassments: The
plaque was placed on the
wrong house and a date in
• the inscription was false.
To mark Mr. Stahl's 125th
birthday, a plaque was
supposed to be placed on the
house where he was born, 41
Alt Rudow St. But the owner
of the house, Baeker Ban-
\ - nert, objected to the plaque if
it revealed that Mr. Stahl
was a Jew, saying he feared
it would lead to anti-Semitic
attacks.
As a compromise, the pla-
que was placed next door on
house No. 43.
When the blue and white
porcelain plaque was
unveiled, another embar-
rassing development oc-
curred. The inscription read,
"In this house was born
Heinrich Stahl, chairman of
the Jewish community in
• Berlin between 1933 and
1942."
However, Mr. Stahl re-
signed as chairman in 1940
because he did not want to
be suspected of collaboration
with the Nazis.
Among those attending
/- this ceremony were 30 of Mr.
Stahl's relatives, some of
who came from New York
and Australia.
"It is sad to hear that the
owner of the original house
refused to hang the plaque,"
• said Mr. Stahl's grandson,
Werner, 70. And the City
Council representative for
education, Wolfgang
Schimmang, commented on
the false inscription by say-
ing, "to err is human."
In 1940, after he had al-
ready paid the special
"flight tax" to leave Ger-
many, he was arrested and
deported to the There-
sienstadt concentration
camp, where he died two
years later at the age of 74 of
a lung inflammation.
The incorrect plaque will
not hang for long, Mr.
Schimmang said at the
ceremony.
In the fall, house No. 43
will be demolished to make
way for new construction.
The owner of the house
promised, however, that a
plaque for Mr. Stahl will be
placed on the new house,
recording that Mr. Stahl was
born in the neighboring
house, No. 41.
