Hotline Helps
Survivors Cope

Jerusalem (JTA) — On Holo-
caust Remembrance Day
last year, Amcha, a
Jerusalem-based organiza-
tion that gives psychological
and social support to Holo-
caust survivors and their
families, set up a hotline for
those wishing to talk about
their experiences and feel-
ings.
"We expected to get 150
calls at each of our branches
in Haifa, Tel Aviv and
Jerusalem," says John
Lemberger, the organiza-
tion's director.
"Instead, we were over-
whelmed with 1,000 calls,
plus walk- ins to our offices."
Given last year's response,
Amcha staffers maimed the
phone lines again this past
weekend, when Jewish
communities around the
world observed Yom
Hashoah.
Formed six years ago, Am-
cha, the National Israeli
Center for Psychosocial
Support of Survivors of the
Holocaust and Second Ge-
neration, has found that
public observances of Yom
Hashoah inevitably stir up
painful memories that the
survivors have tried to bury.
Though the observances
are a vital way to remember
the Holocaust, says Mr.
Lemberger, "they also
dredge up long-buried
memories. Often, the sur-
vivor feels alienation,
loneliness, guilt and anxi-
ety."
It is not just the survivors
who suffer from the Holo-
caust' s aftermath, he
stresses. "Children of sur-
vivors bear the emotional
wounds of their parents.
Many have sought counsel-
ing and are coming to terms
with their parents' emo-
tional problems."
On a day-to-day basis, the
organization provides in-
dividual and group counsel-
ing, discussion groups and
social activities. It also en-
courages survivors to record
their experiences on
videocassette as a legacy to
their own children, and to
serve as historical
testimony.
To educate the public
about the problems of Holo-
caust survivors, Amcha is
sponsoring two plays that
were performed this week:
Mazal Teomim (The Sign of
Gemini), about Mengele's
experiments on twins; and
From Bubbie to Bat Yam,
written by the son of a Holo-
caust survivor.
